Play Hundreds of Microsoft Windows Games on Desktop Linux

I received a newsletter from Linspire which indicated that Cedega software was now available for purchase and it promised to be able to run Windows based games on Linux. So I went to the Cedega web site for a look. Cedega comes to us via TransGaming Inc., and they indicated that 100’s of games could be played on a Linux system that were originally Windows only. They also state:

Cedega enables Linux gamers to play Windows titles on their Linux OS. Triple-A video games such as Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Battlefield 2142, World of WarCraft, Madden 2007, Civilization IV and many more, can be played on Linux using Cedega. This allows an easy, out-of-the-box gaming experience.

Cedega delivers a gaming experience that matches the Windows experience from Online Play and Copy Protection to Direct3D and Pixel Shaders. Cedega provides the gaming experience along with all the Linux capabilities users have come to rely upon without having to reboot their computer to Windows to play. Cedega’s remarkably intuitive GUI enables Linux gamers to do things that are impossible on Windows. With one action, users can set configurations across every game they have installed. Updating, deleting, moving, and even troubleshooting of every game is accessed from a single, easy-to-use interface.

So I have some questions. Has anyone tried this software product? What is your opinion of the software? Let us know.

Comments welcome.

I have tried the Cedega software on Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn operating system. My findings weren’t completely satisfying. The Cedega software is based on an open source project called wine. The main difference is the fact that Cedega uses a GUI to set configurations. This is also a draw back in my opinion. Using Wine software, I was able to run as many Windows software packages if not more then in Cedega. In my opinion, if you are looking to run Windows programs in Linux I would try Wine first before paying for Cedega.

Hello jeff T-P,
Thanks for the info. I don’t think I’ll be buying it anytime soon. :-)
