E-Mail:

AVG 8 Users – Get The User Manual

I received this from a reader known as ros today, and it jogged my memory about getting the AVG 8 free user manual:

hey i just upgraded from avg7.5 to 8.0 (free edition), all seems to be well but there is one issue that is irratating me.

I dont like the automatic updates (cause first thing on boot up it accesses the net bla bla bla… sometimes i have something urgent to do, i hate AVG holding me up)

Anyway with AVG 7.5 i had it disabled, no problem. Now with 8 i have done the same except the system tray icon shows the “you may not be protected” icon (grey AVG symbol with red exclamation)opposed to the running normal AVG icon.

the only “error” is the personal choice of wanting to manually update, is there a way of getting AVG 8 to understand i want to manually update and not display the warning icon? cant see anything in the advanced options either.

I sent ros the following reply:

Hello ros,
Try this:
Go to Tools – Advanced Settings – Schedules – Scheduled Scans and uncheck the startup option.

Also you may wish to get the AVG 8 user manual:

Hope this helps.

Which made me wonder. With so many people having issues with AVG 8, how many of these problems would be solved if all users got a copy of the user manual. Version 8 provides more protections than version 7.5, and therefore is more complicated. Taking a peek at the user manual may help.

Comments welcome.

PS This manual is in .pdf format and is 2.7MB in size.

After updating from AVG 7.5 Pro to AVG 8 on my XP SP3 PC, I was constantly having to re-enter my details when accessing Gmail and other sites because the cookies were disappearing. Also Windoze Explorer was taking forever to fully display the contents of directories containing a lot of files.
I uninstalled AVG 8 and reinstalled AVG 7.5 and all those problems disappeared. I don’t have time to fool around with detailed settings in AVG. In fact when my current license expires I’ll probably look for another, simpler, anti-virus program to replace it completely because I don’t particularly like its strange way of doing things. Typical European software.
I hope this isn’t one of those web pages which demands that I register before my comments will be accepted, because I won’t.

Hi Fred,
No registration required. But the comments are moderated to prevent the occasional profanity posts that add nothing to the discussion. :-)

Thanks for dropping by. Ron

After making the mistake of upgrading to AVG 8 (per their request), I took the entire Memorial Day weekend to re-image my XP SP2 Compaq. I did this because, just like Fred (and apparently numerous others), my PC just got slower and slower to do everything, including startup.

I used the phrase “mistake … upgrading … AVG 8″ because after I brought my PC back to factory specs (I still have all the factory CDs), I started loading my personal software one by one.

All was OK until I loaded AVG 8. There it was! Back to slow, slow, slow.

Uninstalled AVG 8 and I’m back to running the way I remember. I hate being without anti-virus protection but thankfully, Zone Alarm seems to be keeping me rather safe.

I’m not a computer geek but if I had to throw out a guess, I would guess AVG 8 somehow builds upon itself over time and takes way too much room on the harddrive and/or it has a memory “leak” that eventually comsumes all free space. Kinda like Eraser does at the end of it’s cycle.

Anyway … my two-cents and thanks Ron. You’ve got a nice place here. I’m going to bookmark it and start visiting regularly.

Hello Randy,
Just curious. By any chance are you using Vista?

There is a KB fix here.

Thanks for stopping by.

I have read all the post so far and comments. I had upgraded to the AVG 8.0 paid version, uninstalled it and installed AVG 8.0 free with the hope my computer would go back to it’s normal speed.
I have high speed internet, use the wireless signal for digital tv and not accustomed to the extreme slowness.
I am understanding this is somehow connected to AVG 8.0
I can use the manual but am I truly going to resolve my problems with AVG 8.0. I have too much information on my computer for business to be backing up and going back to original configuration in the drop of a hat.
Input welcome.
Rivkah
