Dell’s Vostro Laptop - No Touch Typing Allowed

Seems that Dell doesn’t like people who touch type, and decided to move a key around and misalign the keyboard. Users who purchased the new Dell Vostro laptop, noted the Z key out of place. Take a look here. Dell confirmed the mistake and the keyboards will be replaced. But what is amazing, is how this could happen in the first place. Who made the decision to move the keys around on the standard keyboard?

So now Dell has one more issue to add to their woes. Quality assurance. If they can’t get the keyboard right, it would make one wonder if the guts inside will work as advertised.  Dell was hoping to increase their laptop business by at least 50%, but this is a rocky start for the computer company.

What do you think? Is the keyboard issue minor, or will it hurt Dell?

Dell is a computer company that is on top because it is cheap. What most people don’t know (basic computer people) is that the computer is dumb. They just see the price and say ok $299 for a new computer, great, sign me up. NOT. The most likely made the keyboard that way to say their innovated and advanced though changing a few keys confuse people and will make people angry. Who wants to learn a whole new keyboard setup. All Dell is doing is proving how stupid they are. Now they have to replace all these keyboards that probably cost $0.01 to make.

Hello,

While this does seem a monumental goof from a quality assurance/release acceptance perspective, it does seem like a very simple one to fix, and I suspect Dell will be shipping out replacement keyboards or providing onsite replacement service to affected customers shortly. I would be surprised if this was more than a short-term hiccup—or even a blink—in Dell’s notebook strategy.

I would assume Dell (and other manufacturers) are adding QWERTY/QWERTZ/AZERTY/{fill-in-the-blank} keyboard layout checks to their acceptance tests and that this should never happen again.

Of course, if it does happen again to Dell (or to another top tier manufacturer) that would be very interesting.

Well, what more can be said. Dell are in fact attempting to overhaul the market and increase their laptop sales, but by allowing such a mistake through their quality control, immediately says to me that if something so obviously noticable can escape their radars, what other mistakes have been made that they are unaware about?

Personally, although this is a small error on their part, it gives me doubts as to whether I would trust the rest of their product lines now and in the future.

Thanks everyone for your comments.
