Chemicals Hidden In Our Food Change How Our Tongue Tastes

Oh, goodie. The chemical companies are at it again, this time adding chemicals to change the flavor we taste, by blocking the taste receptors on our tongues. By doing this the food companies can reduce sugar, salt or whatever than block our tongues from tasting the difference. According to this article from Mercola.com it states:

If you pick up a can of soup and find that the sodium levels are lower than you expected, or that a food item advertises it has “less sugar” or “no MSG” … then there may be cause for alarm.

A relatively young company, Senomyx, may be responsible for the sodium and sugar levels falling in various grocery store items. They may be putting chemicals into your food right now, without telling you and without you even realizing. Under the law, they don’t have to.

Senomyx has contracted with Kraft, Nestle, Coca Cola, and Campbell Soup to put a chemical in foods that masks bitter flavors by turning off bitter flavor receptors on your tongue. The companies can then reduce sugar and sodium levels by approximately half without affecting the flavor.

All of the companies declined to identify which foods and beverages the chemical additives have been or will be added to. These chemical compounds are not required to be listed separately on food labels; they are grouped into the general category of “artificial flavors.”

Senomyx was able to obtain FDA approval and a “generally recognized as safe” classification from the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association in less than a year and a half, based on a safety study of rats conducted for just 3 months.

Food items that are most likely to contain these new chemicals include soups, juices (fruit and vegetable), ice cream and sauces.

I wouldn’t worry to much about this though. Just repeat after me, the FDA says all is well, the FDA says all is well……..

Well now I know why that slogan is so famous! “Have a Coke and a smile” makes so much more sense now that I’ve seen your article Ron … LOL I worked for that company for 22 long, back breaking years. A fantastic company when I started, and then they went down the tubes when they stopped taking care of the “little guy” and devoted their resources to the big chain stores. Guess what happened? Pepsi stepped in and was welcomed with open arms. AND, very little in house merchandising involved, so other than the actual delivery, they saved a ton of money. South Boston MA is a good case in point. Back in the early ’70s, Coke practically owned the town. Now one would be hard pressed to see any outlet that carries their products. Yes, lots of mom & pop operations in Southie, and Pepsi stepped up to the plate and took good care of business!

Didn’t mean to stray from the topic Ron, but every time I see the word COKE I turn red … pardon the pun! LOL
In addition to the additive you mentioned, they also have several different blends of Coke, depending on what package it’s in! They won’t admit to that, but it’s a fact of life. Plastic bottles, cans, glass bottles all have different mixes to accomodate the particular containers involved. Remember way back when you could get the original 6-1/2 ounce green glass bottle? Only a container that hefty could handle the syrup/carbonation mix. It literally burnt going down your throat! Made a great rum/Coke drink! Never went flat either!

Thanks Don - interesting comments.
