We all are aware of the ‘10 best’ articles that list the writers opinion of which ‘utilities’ or other software are the best. or essential or whatever that a user should use on their computer system. In fact, I read one 10 best articles yesterday that listed a product that no longer was available. So much for the best of the best.
In the blog community it is common knowledge that these 10, 20, 30 or more lists attract traffic to your site. But what is unfortunate is that many of these lists have a hidden agenda behind them. There are allegations that some people who blog, write or evaluate products, may have ulterior motives. Most of what is being written about these allegations are not substantiated by fact, just conjecture.
I usually send clients over to the “Best-ever Freeware Utilites” by Gizmo. The site has a very well balanced diet of freebies, some of which I use. But I don’t agree 100% of what is listed in the #1, #2 or other categories. Why? Because I have my own personal favorites. So should you.
There is one point that I will share. Over the years I have found that many of the free products are just as good, if not better, than some of their paid counter parts. Not to get into a pissing contest about paid vs free, in again comes down to choice. What you trust and what you chose to use.
I have a very good friend who uses Norton anti-virus on his systems. I have recommended that he try AVG as an alternative but he has not heeded my recommendations. He likes Norton, feels comfortable using it, and has no reason to change. I respect his decision and have dropped providng an opinion of what he should use.
Bottom line. You decide what softwares are best for your computer. If I recommend a product and you chose not to try it, let me know your opinion and share your thoughts. I’ll be doing a review next week on the latest from AVG, free version #8. Your opinions are welcome.
