Free Laptop Offers - Another Look

Just about a year ago [March 5, 2007] I did an article on those free laptop offers that most of us still see being offered. What surprises me is that the original article I wrote still receives comments. But I thought I would revisit this issues after I received this comment this morning from a reader named TDR who stated:

“Wow, you guys are lucky to avoid that scam email/site

I went to getmyfreelaptop.com, after I saw the Tv commercial. I never had to give my social security number, I finished the 8 offers for a total of $20 out of my pocket, and I am typing this from my laptop

Not too bad! I guess some sites are complete B.S. and some are very very shaddy! I figured if they advertise on network TV the law has to regulate them?! Anyways I know that site worked for me personally without needing any SSC#

Hope that helps those of you that really need a laptop like I did.”

I haven’t personally tried the site mentioned by TDR so I thought I would ask if anyone else has tried this site? If so, what has your experience been? OR if you are aware of any legitimate site, please pass this information onto us. It would be appreciated.

Comments welcome.

What do you think?

What do you mean $20? I read a couple of the “terms & conditions” and every one requires you buy or try many offers from manufacturers or vendors. Yes, most you can simply cancel after your trial and others require you receive a ton of what amounts to spam for a certain period…I’d rather just pay for a laptop (as cheap as they are now) rather than risk missing their deadline to cancel some offer I never wanted in the first place and now having charges on my credit card that are impossible to remove. I’ve gone through that before and it’s NOT worth the risk of ID Theft (any info including birth date is too much info these days), fraudulent charges, or the annoyance of having to get charges removed. Forget it.

Very interesting question. I think this would be a great question to pose to the consumer and financial talk show host Clark Howard. He often has an idea about whether offers like this are legitimate. Having said that if it sounds like its too good to be true than most likely it is. Few things in the world are a free lunch and you are not likely to get any kind of new laptop without spending some substantial money somewhere.

What are your thoughts?
