AVG Commercial Upgrades To Version 8 – Free Edition Remains At 7.5

Just a quick note.

During the past week, I received several emails from folks who are using the free edition of AVG who wanted to know if they should upgrade to version 8. AVG has changed the version number to version 8 for their commercial software only. The free edition of AVG remains at version 7.5. It will only be a matter of time before AVG will change the version and upgrade the free edition also. But there will be plenty of warning before this happens.

Comments welcome.

Been running the free version of AVG 7.5 for some time now Ron, and it’s been an excellent addition here. I did check out their PRO version awhile back, and the only difference was an additional “suite” for things I already had. Can’t see anyone buying it and getting very little in return. Of course, if they had it as a shareware program, I’d definitely make the donation! LOL.

Speaking of freebies … the full version of SP1 for Vista, which is approximately 455 Mb in length, is now available at Microsoft. I did it as a “save to disc”, and installed it. Thanks to a friend who’s been running it for about a week now, he suggested I do a few reboots, as SP1 needs to “learn” what’s on one’s system and put it back in order! Seemed to make no sense to me, but IT WORKED! I’m now running a system that boots up and shuts down fairly quickly again.

Sorry to get off topic, but I had mentioned poor results with the short version of SP1, and just wanted to bring you up to date on things.

    Thanks, Ron,
Now maybe I can still use Windows 98 and free AVG. Glad you found these little known facts. I have bookmarked this site.

    Hello Gayle,
Version 8 only goes back to Win2K. :-(

I’ve installed AVG Free 8 on two Vista machines, and until I uninstalled it, it blocked any number of websites… the overall effect being that it appeared that the DSL connection was very slow. For example, could get HotMail Live, but could not send, delete, move, etc. This is normally what happens when the upload speed is not strong enough. BUT removing AVG cleared this up.

Could find no settings within AVG to prevent this behaviour, even after turning off the new AVG toolbar in IE/Firefox.

And now they want us to drop 7.5 already? Wow.

    Hello Miker,
I believe that AVG 7.5 will work until 12-31-08. The ‘nag’ screens indicate only until May 3, 2008, but on the forums support indicates tha later date. Hopefully in the next six months, AVG 8 will be refined. :-)
