Asus Eee PC: All I Need For Daily Computing

For the past few months I have been looking around for a new laptop system to supplement my full sized laptop system. I had also previously mentioned my fondness for the old IBM Z50 which I really enjoyed using. So when I saw the Asus Eee PC yesterday, I was immediately drawn to it. So what are the specs on this mini-laptop?

The model I looked at came with a Intel mobile CPU at 900Mhz, 512 MB RAM & 4G SSD. Coming in white the plastic housing Asus uses is fairly attractive and blends well with the mini 7.5″ screen. Operating system is Linux and Wi-Fi is standard. I took a look at Amazon and found this model for $351. There are also models available is various colors with 2G SSD for $299.

Now. This model is limited compared to a standard laptop. 4 GB of disk space is small. OK, it is downright puny. But laptops like these are not made for slapping on a bunch of files. These type of systems are best used for cloud computing where you store your stuff on the Web. Using something like Google Docs and Apps is where this little guy will shine. At least I hope this is the case.

You guessed it. I ordered one for myself. Once it arrives and I have had a chance to play with it, I’ll do a review and confirm what I already suspect. I think this puppy is going to fit my needs perfectly.

If anyone owns this little guy and has any comments or suggestions, please post them.

Comments welcome.

Ron, I had a test run for a few days with the Asus Eee. I found that it was a terrific product for ‘on-the-go’ computing. It is very portable and fits in the pocket of a lab coat, for example. I think you will find it exceptional. Let us know when you will be ordering a SDHC card to increase the capacity. The only negative that I found was that the keyboard was a bit small. It increased typing errors. I am used to touch typing and I needed a bit more than a few days to adjust. And, of course, there is always the option of a plugging in a full size keyboard for extended sessions with the Eee. For the purposes that the Eee was intended, the keyboard really is a minor issue.

Hi Catherine,
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It is appreciated. I’m looking forward to using this mini PC. :-)

This laptop was touted in a promise for every child in my country, Belize. Yes, 30, 000 children over 4 years would own one of these “puppies.” But, to the chagrin of our educational society, the party with this promise did not succeed.

Hope that is will be picked up by the victors is slim but there is always hope.

The little that I saw…and me surfing their site on the web, http://eeepc.asus.com/global/, made me feel that there was a lot of benefit for our little country. It seemed to me like a great alternative to owning a regular and expensive laptop.

Hi Tony,
Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Ron,
I’ve had the EEE PC since November of last year and although I still use my old computer for graphic intensive programs - my EEE PC and I are inseparable. If it’s not in my backpack with my books or on my lap while I watch TV its always sitting faithfully next to my other computer. It’ll increase your productivity :)
You won’t be disappointed.
