Symantec Norton 360 - Reader Needs Help

A reader by the name of Barrie Orton posted this in the comments section of a previous article I had written here. Not only does Barrie indicate that his system is infected but that he can’t seem to remove the virus as well.

Sadly, I have Norton 360. I read all the bad reports too late. Norton has let in the DOWNLOADER virus onto my machine. Restore replicates it. Norton want me to pay again to get them to remove it. Online Norton (ex) customers’ reports say they can’t get rid of it! Norton online instructions to remove DOWNLOADER are impenetrable to a novice like me and other reports say their instructions don’t work anyway. How do I get rid of DOWNLOADER? How do I get rid of Norton without crashing my machine? What is the best Antivirus to upload that updates itself?

Here are some of my thoughts:

First of all there have been many discussions and some disagreement about turning off System Restore while trying to remove a virus. While I respect those opinions about not doing this, I personally have found it necessary in some cases in order to remove a critter or two from a system. That would be my first recommendation, turn off System Restore. NOTE: After the bug is gone, turn it back on.

Second there are a bunch of fine online virus scanners such as:

Trend Micro House Call here. [highly recommended]

Kaspersky Free Virus Scan here.

Doing a Google will turn up more if the above do not work for you.

The virus you mention does not appear to be the type that you should have any problems removing. It’s been around since 2005 and I am sure that any good virus scanner should be able to remove it without a problem.

Removing Norton 360 should be straightforward as well using the uninstaller that comes with the program. If there is a problem, Norton posts its removal tool, which it indicates does in fact function with 360. The tool can be downloaded from here. I would also run a registry cleaner program such as CCleaner. Other free tools can be found at 46 Best-ever Freeware Utilities located here.

At the above site you will also find recommendations for free anti-virus programs such as AVG and avast! with links to download these freebies.

If anyone has any further suggestions, hints, tips, or tricks that Barrie should try, please feel free to post them.

Comments as always are welcome.

An interesting experience for the chap Ron. I just finished what could be called a horror show by way of a LONG uninstall of LavaSoft’s Ad-Aware a few minutes ago. It was a challenge for sure, as the program just didn’t want to go away. I had an easier time getting rid of my ex wife! (Only kidding, but you get my drift). I opted to purchase Spyware Doctor, after following some good reviews in PC Magazine. Fortunately I had a couple of excellent utilities that FINALLY cleaned things up. JV16 and RegistryBooster2, along with MS’s built-in “Find” utility.

I hadn’t run into a problem that severe in a long long time Ron. Oh, I also experienced similar “resistance” when uninstalling my older Norton AV program a few months ago. Some companies seem to feel that the average user really doesn’t mean it and hangs on “just in case” !!

The only other good news was when Romney dropped out of the race. He was a ZERO as governor of my state and left it a mess. Have a great weekend and hope for better days to come.

Hi Don,
Some programs do seem to try our patience when we go to uninstall them. Let me know what you think Spyware Doctor.
Have a good one, Ron

I used “Spybot search & destroy” to remove a downloader from a friends computer and it has been a great program for the many years I’ve been using it.As far as removing Norton 360 I’m to sure of their removal tool.I tried to use it and now Windows Update no longer works and locks up my machine.I would try “Absolute Uninstaller”Also I switched to Kaspersky Internet Security about 6 months ago and I think it’s doing a great job.
good luck
Doug

Hi Doug,
Thanks for the suggestion.

Geeez, I wonder why Romney won his own state….We are ALL in trouble now….(except for the illegals)

I’m having the same problem with Norton 360. The thing came with the computer, so there’s no way to do a system restore without messing everything up. Norton’s so-called “removal” tool doesn’t do a thing, the program, although uninstalled, keeps blocking my in Internet connection, and there are no registry keys to erase nor archives or folder to delete, not even hidden, or maybe they just wiped every relation with Norton, Symantec, or 360 in the names of the files, to make them untraceable. Oh! And it keeps appearing on the list of installed programmes. I’m not new to computers, and I’ve always been able to work a way around everything, but this is making me lose my patience. Does anybody know anything about this?

I bought Norton 360 with my new laptop. When I started the laptop I found a Fujitsu Siemens and Symantec had got together and frovided a 90 day free Symantec antivirus programme on the laptop. I e-mailed as well as on-line messaging the Symantec corporation and asked them if I should wait the full 90 days and then install my new Norton 360 programme. I also asked what I should uninstall of the free programme first. I received no reply whatsoever. I installed Norton 360 after the 90 day free virus programme had finished, having first unistalled all I could of the free virus checker programme. The programme did not load up fully claiming there were 6 items unfinished and later stating one item could not be automatically fixed. I was unable to log on to my Hotmail account as it said there were security certificate issues. Not knowing what else to do, as Symantec will just not reply to anything asked of them, I eventually took the laptop back and the supplier, I believe messed the system up even further. Once they had gone so far they decided to reinstal Windows and even this failed. My laptop has just returned from Fujitsu Siemens having been returned as faulty. To there credit Fujitsu Siemens have returned it to its original state - remember it had worked for 90 days just fine - and then Norton 360 came on the scene.
I have e-mailed Symantec wandering just what to do now - to reload or beg for version 2 to be supplied to me. I just do not know what to do.
Symantec have ripped me of and judging by the blogs here they are doing just this worldwide.
In what other industry would any company be allowed to get away with such low levels of service. Symantec - never again, I just do not know how they get away with this level of robbery. Potential buyers beware. It’s a rip-off.
Should I load AVG instead?

You can try the new AVG 8, however, some folks are having issues with the new version which now includes anti-spyware.
AVG is working on a fix SP1 but it is unknown when it will be released.

In the interim, I’d use Avast.

Hope this helps.

I too would like to get rid of Norton 360, that they so generously “gave” me with my new laptop. I tried to remove it with the first one I had and then could not connect to the internet. I returned it to the store. With this one, I downloaded AVAST right away and did nothing with Norton but it keeps popping up and I cannot close it. I know there is a removal tool but it is you are supposed to uninstall it first. Does anyone have any ideas?

What Do You Think?
