Not Much Enthusiasm For ‘Keep Windows XP’ Petition

Enthusiasm for the ‘Keep Windows XP’ petition over at Infoworld has only garnered about 75,000 signatures. Seems that people are either liking Vista or don’t care which operating system they use. Or could it be something something else?
Yesterday I wrote about Torvalds take on Linux and why people are not flocking to that OS. The basics of his assumption were that folks were happy with Windows. Could be the same is true here. People are happy with Vista or they don’t care what they use as long as it works. Isn’t that the real bottom line of any operating system? That it just works?
So what do you think?
Comments welcome.

I’m using Vista at home and at work as is an associate of mine and several other people I’ve known.
We’re universally agreed, it sucks. We use it because we’re IT people who need to know how to deal with it, how to support it and how to overcome it’s bugs, but none of us have been happy with it.
I think the same sheeple mentality that locks people onto their old machines locks them onto Vista. If something doesn’t work, they assume it is their fault. If they get it to do something important, they are terrified they might fail if they tried a different system.
People aren’t signing the petition by the droves because they don’t:
A. Realize it is there
B. Believe it will make any difference
Sadly, they’re probably right about B. MS recently carefully avoided giving any indication that they would pay any attention to it. There is no history of MS deciding to keep an OS alive due to consumer demand (retailer: yes, consumer: no.)

Maybe it would be a good idea to keep a Windows XP “partition”……

I didn’t know about the petition to save XP until this afternoon. I don’t think most people even know that Microsoft is planning to stop selling XP. When I bought my computer it had Vista I used it for 2 months before I dumped Vista and installed XP. It’s disappointing were not going to have this option too much longer.
