Stories You Will Read About In 2008

A few days ago I was thinking about what will be some of the news makers in 2008, when it stuck me that the news makers will be far and few between. But the stories we will read about will follow a similar path to those written in 2007. Let me explain. With millions of folks blogging these days, plus the journalists who write for many of the tech magazines, everyone is chasing after the same news. In order to distinguish yourself from the crowd you have to be creative in your approach and analysis of what is happening around you.
The number game. First you have to chose a number. 5, 10, 20, and so forth. Than a subject. Vista is always popular. A snappy title is always necessary to attract the attention of the masses. A good one that will attract attention is something like ‘10 things you will hate about Vista’. Toss in a few things you know people will agree with like the high price of Vista, being slow compared to XP, needs expensive hardware, and so forth. Or reverse it and say ‘10 things you will love about Vista’. The security, pretty colors and so forth.
Next we will hear about Vista SP1 or XP SP3. There will be many tales covering the good and bad of each service pack which will be basically broken down into three categories:
1. The SP made no difference.
2. The SP was a great improvement.
3. The SP wrecked my machine.
The Intel vs AMD debate will rage on. We will hear that either AMD is going out of business or that they will be making a dramatic come back.
Of course the Windows vs Linux vs Apple or any combination of the three is always good for a few thousand pages of type. The headlines I always enjoy reading are the ones like ‘Is Linux ready for the desktop?’ countered by ‘Why Linux is not ready for the desktop’.
Google will once more be promoted to the top rank of Microsoft slayer.
Speaking of Google, we need some more Google rumors.
I will fall into the trappings of the above. I’m already working on my 5,10, 20 lists. LOL
Have a great New Year everyone.

Happy New Year to you also Ron, and also to all the participants in this never-ending blog. Yes, the endless debates will indeed be endless come 2008 and beyond, as it’s the nature of the beast to piss & moan. Makes for a healthy environment though, as differences of opinion are what bring new ideas and solutions to this mess we call The Internet! LOL.
My new Gateway is just about all fine-tuned and tweaked the way I want it, and I must say that I haven’t experience any Vista problems whatsoever Ron. Am I unique in this or is it because the entire system was brand new, with all drivers included with the installed hardware? I made a total of 20 Acronis backups along the way just to cover my butt, and it paid off, as a couple of times I messed up bad and had to “restore” to the last good point. Once I was completely satisfied with things, I deleted all but 5 backups and the system rocks.
I only lost the use of maybe 3 or 4 utility programs from the XP days, but no big deal. The latest version of Acronis has some nice utilities built into the suite, such as a shredder-type pgm which does a thorough cleansing of the free space and deleted “personal items” !! Can’t say enough about that program, as it’s worth its weight in gold to me, AND with an external hd, it’s much easier to do impulsive backups and not worry about running out of DVD’s.
Take care and have a great New Year’s Ron.

With regards to the soon-to-be release of Vista SP1 … I will definitely d/load it but will NOT install it pending your analysis of it. I would probably recommend everyone to take that position and not rush into it … and of course … make a backup before the installation!

Hi Don,
I’m glad to hear that Vista is treating you well. I don’t believe you are the exception. Many folks enjoy using Vista very much.
Waiting on SP1 is good advice. I haven’t experienced any problems thus far with the beta. But that is just one system.
Those Pats are looking pretty good. 16-0 is impressive.
Have a great New Year as well.
All the best, Ron
