Commodore 64 - 25 Years Old

I am sure for many of us, the Commodore 64 holds many fond memories since this PC introduced many of us to the fascinating world of computers. I bought mine back in 1985 and still recall the excitement the new machine held after I got it up and running. What brought this to mine was an article concerning a celebration that occurred last evening in Mountain View, CA., in which such notables as Wozniak, Jobs and the founders of the Commodore 64 got together at the  Computer History Museum. They were celebrating what best could be described as ‘the good old days’ when computing for personal use was still in its infancy.

Today the computer has become a standard appliance for many of us just like a toaster, TV or radio has become. The computing power of todays systems boggles the mind compared to the older systems. But one thing hasn’t changed over the years at least for me. This was brought back to mind this past Thanksgiving holiday when I built a new computer system for one of our daughters. Her old system of  8 years was slowly dying and it was time for a replacement.

After slapping all the hardware together it was time to install Windows. I still had the anticipation that I have had in building other systems. The sense of wonderment and fascination that once I got Windows up and running, there would be a full blown computer system waiting to do our bidding. OK. Maybe it wasn’t really like this, but it sure sounds good! The real feeling is more like I hope this thing boots. :-)

I believe that the most exciting thing coming our way is going to be SSD - Solid State Drives. Once prices start to come down the SSD will start to replace our older mechanical drives.

What do you think will also make our computing experience flourish?

Comments welcome.
