Top 25 Online Backup Services

Yesterday I did a mini review of Mozy online backup [here] after trying the free software product on two of my systems. Reader Peter provided a link to a site that has recommendations and also reviews of the top 25 products they consider being the best to use. It was good to see that Mozy was rated as #3 in the review process.
Yesterday I also recommended Mozy to my buddy Denny to take for a spin as well. Denny had suffered a major drive failure a few years back and had lost all of his data in the crash. I’m hoping he will stop by and give his opinion on how Mozy worked or didn’t work for him.
The real proof in the pudding is whether any service can restore the files properly. With this in mind, I’m going to setup a clean install of Windows XP on my test system and see how well a restore actually works. I’ll be doing a follow-up to the original report once this is completed and will report back with my results.
Stay tuned.
Thanks Peter for the info and site recommendation.
Comments welcome.
Review site is here.
PS As I stated yesterday, online backup services should compliment your backups and should not be used by themselves.

Good Morning Ron…….
Last Night I Registered and Downloaded MOZY
Then Set-It to Run While I was Sleep-in …….
Got up this mornin and BINGO everthing was Backed-up
900 Megs of my SECRET–STUFF It took about 7 Hours on DSL
It was also nice that MOZY does a test first to see if your
system is fast enough to use this product……I–LIKE–IT…Ron
I also went into Configure and Schedule to
……….UNCHECK AUTO BACK-UP DAILY………
I rather do it when I want to do it….
Looks Like Another Great FREE–ONE…!…from Google..
Thanks For Another Great Tip..Ron

Hi Denny,
Thanks for sharing your opinion with us. I like it as well and will be using it. I also removed the daily backup scheduler and will also do it when I want.
Thanks again, Ron

I wanted to let you know about a cool backup program that offers FREE and UNLIMITED backup. Since we just launched our beta in September, we are not yet in the top 25 list, but hope to be there soon!
With Zoogmo you control where your files are backed up by building a backup network of your own or your friends’ computers. You can even backup to an external hard drive of your choice.
Zoogmo runs silently in the background and automatically backs up ALL of your data over the internet, using a combination of Triple-DES and AES 256 encryption to make sure that only you have access to your files.
Check out Zoogmo at http://www.zoogmo.com to download Zoogmo for free and begin turning your social network into your backup network.
Remember, with Zoogmo you have no annoying monthly fees - totally free unlimited backup you can trust!

Hello Dov Sugarman,
Thanks for the info. I’ll put you on my list of things to try. I do like the UNLIMITED backup part.
Thanks, Ron

What many small businesses are doing now is adopting backup services that also provide onsite hardware that stages the backup locally for fast recovery, then sends the backup data over the WAN to the remote site vault. Services such as Mozy and Carbonite are designed for individual system backup while services such as Amerivault and DS3 Datavaulting are more relevant for SMBs. Many such service companies use software from Asigra which is then loaded onto a staged backup server at the small/medium business site and and ‘radios’ the data over the wire in compressed and de-duplicated format (for performance and cost reasons) back to the offsite storage vault at Amerivault, DS3, etc., etc. While this may be considered too much protection for the consumer, a business will typically desire this ability to recovery quickly as a result of the staged backup.

I have been using a free account by http://www.offsitebackupsolutions.com while they dont offer as much free space as some of the others, I have compared their software and found it to be much more robust.
