Vista + Palm + UMPC Question - Can They Sync?

Reader Michael 2005 posted this question and I thought I would toss it out here, to see if anyone could help him with his problem. He stated:

Hi! I am intending to replace Palm LifeDrive & iPod with the UMPC - OQO’s Model 02. I’ve read on both Microsoft’s & Palm’s websites that Vista will NOT work with Palm’s HotSync nor DataViz’s Documents To Go (both Windows-based software). As I want to use my old Palm OS software on the OQO (in its own partition), I will have to use a Palm OS emulator. Thus, I think that I will need 3 partitions = (1) Windows Tablet PC, (2) Windows Vista, & (3) Palm software. The OQO comes with 1G RAM & 120 Gb HD along with Tablet PC functionality (digitizer pen, screen rotation) & Windows Table PC edition (can choose Vista also). It is my understanding that the only need for Windows XP will be (1) for the Palm OS emulator (to run the Palm software) & (2) for the Windows software - HotSync & Docs To Go. Is this possible? Am I being too ambitious? The total package for the OQO will be about $4,600 (no other software but OS). I’m even curious if one could boot the OQO into an iPod OS to run iTunes without loading a full OS (to save battery life).

Please comment. This is an expensive undertaking & I don’t want to screw it up. I’m tired of carrying around my Palm LifeDrive (which has been discontinued) & my 3rd generation iPod (which now won’t run past 30 min). As Steve Jobs has gone over to the dark side (i.e., new iPod has chip to prevent unauthorized - “old” - accessories from being used), I won’t be purchasing another iPod for any reason. Really want to just carry 1 device and the OQO may be it. Yikes.

My first reaction when I read what Michael 2005 wanted to do was ” I don’t have a clue!”. LOL  I’m not familiar with the UMPC make and model he is referring to, though I did take a look at the web site.

If anyone has any suggestions, please post your comments.

WOW! That’s all I can say to this project. Can’t imagine sinking $4600 into this project, but then again, I’m not that “into” music. Sure I enjoy slipping a cd into my car’s sound system, but don’t know if I’d be willing to make that kind of investment in “walking mode”.

Yeah, Apple does make it difficult to enjoy what you’ve already paid for. MS does the same thing these days … no more “backward compatibility” means more sales and $$$$$$’s for those willing to pay the price to these Bas*&*****!!!

Tongue-in-cheek comment: For 4600 bucks, you could make a great down payment on a sweet set of wheels so you don’t have to walk around with an Ipod! LOL

Hi Don,
That is what I like about computers and technology. The fact that people can use their systems for a variety of things. Like yourself, I am not into using my system for music and this is why I posted the question.

Hello,

Since Michael 2005 is planning on making such a considerable investment, I am wondering if a little bit more research on his part may be in order. To wit, I am wondering if it might be better for him to import all of his data from his Palm LifeDrive and Apple iPod onto his current computer, get it converted/exported/transcoded into formats supported by currently-available supported software (Microsoft Office, OpenOffice and WordPerfect Office for documents; and Windows Media Player or Apple iTunes for the music files on the iPod) and when all of the data is in usable formats and verified as correct, purchase an OQO Model 02 (or whatever they are introducing next month in London) and then transfer the resultant set of data over to the OQO. This does presume some things which Michael 2005 probably wished to avoid, such as having to learn new applications and possible lose of functionality for some old ones, however, the advantage would be that he now has all of his data in modern formats and is accessing it with applications that are fully supported from their various vendors, and that can be pretty important when one tries to do something “new” or “different” with one’s data.

Regardless of what Michael 2005 does, there is one thing I would strongly suggest: Make lots and lots of backups of his valuable personal data.

Hello Aryeh,
Thanks for the suggestions. After he makes lots and lots of backups he may wish to make one more as well. :-)
Regards, Ron
