Firefox 3 Beta 1 Review - Part #2

Well after my last review [here] of Firefox 3 Beta 1, I tried the new browser on some of my other systems. I set it up on my wife’s computer running Windows XP Media Center and also on my test system running Vista. On both of these systems I had the exact same problem. Memory use just took off like a rocket. On both of these systems, the OS became inoperable due to high memory use.
So just out of curiosity, I installed Firefox 3 Beta 1 back onto my personal computer, which is a laptop running Windows XP Home. Guess what? It worked just fine the second time around. Memory usage hovered around 58 to 66k. I used the browser for 3 days running with not ill effects.
So I guess the questions is why? Why upon first installation on 3 systems did FF Beta 1 take off using a bunch of memory?
Others have noticed this same problem. While others have had no issues.
I know I don’t have the answer.
Comments welcome.

Ron, I’m just guessing, but it’s possible that FF addressed memory management with Vista in mind, and not XP Pro (???). As stated in your earlier Blog, this IS a Beta release, so it should prove very interesting what the Released version looks like and how it behaves in BOTH OS’s.
It would be a real shame if FF fails to recognize us diehard XP users! I still swear by this OS and will not do anything with Vista until the SP1 is released in ‘08. Oh, saw some very interesting reviews on the Beta version of SP3 for XP in PC Mag last night. Most favorable with regards to performance and speed.

Hi Don,
I think that FF will work equally well with XP and Vista. I also think that the final release will work fine and that the memory problem will be better addressed. I HOPE! LOL
Have a good day.
