Firefox 3 Beta 1 Review - Memory Usage Is Worse!

As most of you know, I am an avid Firefox user and have been for at least 4 years. For the most part, I personally find Firefox easy to use, and even with the high memory usage, have stuck with it. So today when I downloaded Firefox 3 Beta 1, I was hoping that this problem would be a thing of the past. What happened next was totally unbelievable.
After I installed Firefox 3 Beta 1 I fired it up for a test spin. I opened 4 tabs, which I usually do during the day and is part of my normal routine. After about 5 minutes or so, my hard disk light was going bonkers. My system started to slow down and became unresponsive. I was finally able to open task manager and noticed that Firefox was using a whopping 791,840k and was still climbing.
After almost 10 minutes of trying, I finally was able to reboot my computer. I tried Firefox 3 Beta 1 again, and at first I thought all was well. This lasted for about 5 minutes and again, memory shot up over 800,000k. I did this 4 times and each time it was the same. After an hour I finally just uninstalled the beta.
I filed a report with the Mozilla team. It was difficult not saying something nasty.
This behavior is totally beyond belief. The issue of high memory usage has been noted by many users. Yet it seems that this one issue is still being totally ignored or not fixable. I don’t care how many new features Firefox 3 has, if the memory issue is not resolved, the browser is totally useless.
Heh Mozilla people. Please take a serious look at this problem. It really does need to be fixed.
Has anyone else tried the beta? What was your experience?
Comments welcome.

Just wondering, but what firewall & AV do you have running at the same time?

I downloaded Firefox 3 beta for OS X. In Leopard, it feels slower than version 2.

Using just the built-in Windows firewall and AVG Free AV.

Ron: Did you have Norton Antivirus running on your system when this happened?

Hi! I am intending to replace Palm LifeDrive & iPod with the UMPC - OQO’s Model 02. I’ve read on both Microsoft’s & Palm’s websites that Vista will NOT work with Palm’s HotSync nor DataViz’s Documents To Go (both Windows-based software). As I want to use my old Palm OS software on the OQO (in its own partition), I will have to use a Palm OS emulator. Thus, I think that I will need 3 partitions = (1) Windows Tablet PC, (2) Windows Vista, & (3) Palm software. The OQO comes with 1G RAM & 120 Gb HD along with Tablet PC functionality (digitizer pen, screen rotation) & Windows Table PC edition (can choose Vista also). It is my understanding that the only need for Windows XP will be (1) for the Palm OS emulator (to run the Palm software) & (2) for the Windows software - HotSync & Docs To Go. Is this possible? Am I being too ambitious? The total package for the OQO will be about $4,600 (no other software but OS). I’m even curious if one could boot the OQO into an iPod OS to run iTunes without loading a full OS (to save battery life).
Please comment. This is an expensive undertaking & I don’t want to screw it up. I’m tired of carrying around my Palm LifeDrive (which has been discontinued) & my 3rd generation iPod (which now won’t run past 30 min). As Steve Jobs has gone over to the dark side (i.e., new iPod has chip to prevent unauthorized - “old” - accessories from being used), I won’t be purchasing another iPod for any reason. Really want to just carry 1 device and the OQO may be it. Yikes.
Thanks for your time.

After using Firefox some more:
I’m not sure what OS you have, but in Leopard, Firefox does the same thing. I used Activity Monitor to watch it and found that Firefox has a huge memory leak. It slowly takes more and more memory over time and in about 3-4 minutes my iBook and even my PowerMac are frozen and the beach ball is spinning. The highest Firefox got before my PowerMac slowed to a halt was 1.5 gigs of memory.

“The issue of high memory usage has been noted by many users. Yet it seems that this one issue is still being totally ignored or not fixable.”
What!! “Ignored”? You think memory leaks are fixable with a snap of the fingers? Fixing memory usage has always been a priority for them and they’ve been scrambling to find out and fix any memory issue they can. If you follow the CVS logs like I do you’ll find out why Mozilla developers take umbrage to comments like this that say they’re doing nothing. Its not hard to do a little research before making such bold assumptions like that…
Lots of users like myself are experiencing significantly better memory usage than 2.0 so you must be doing something wrong.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your comments and for sharing your thoughts.
The system I installed it on is using Windows XP Pro w/ SP2, using just the built in Windows firewall and AVG free edition AV.
I must be doing something wrong? Like what? Suggestions are welcome.
I’m going to do some further testing and will report my results.
Thanks, Ron

Yesterday I installed the firefox 3 beta on my laptop running OpenSuse 10.3. This morning I removed it. I experienced exactly the same problems you describe. Basically the laptop became unusable due to the high disk thrash. After 10 minutes I was able to open a console and kill off the firefox process. Immediately the computer became usable again.

Yesterday, I installed the beta of Firefox 3.0. Today I checked the Task Manager and it running 58,304K. I will continue monitor if it show any memory leak.
I am using Vista Ultimate 32bits.

Ah, sounds like the Indians are circling the wagons on this one Ron. Geez, “you must be doing something wrong” .. your reply (”like what?”) was about all anyone could respond to such a remark! LOL
A simple observation with a beta release and then it’s: “fire in the hole”. Most of the above comments concurred with your experience Ron, so I can’t see anyone becoming defensive of those observations. It’s almost like a Mac vs PC war all over again. I didn’t see anything that even remotely hinted of a personal attack on Firefox Ron. I’ve been using it for well over a year now, but almost never install beta versions of anything.
I just hope that when the smoke clears, you’ll still be willing to continue your fine services to one and all!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all of the comments and observations.
I’m going to do a follow-up report and this and my other experiences with the new beta of FF.
Don,
I don’t get to excited about any comments with bad or good. I can only report my experience[s]. I’m still using FF and think it is a great browser.
Denny,
No IE 7 for me dude. I’m a FF user only! LOL
Take care everyone and have a great weekend.

I have done a comparison of memory usage of
Firefox 2, Firefox 3, Opera 9, and IE 7.
The result is that Firefox 3 still uses more memory than Firefox 2.
IE 7 is just a memory hog.
Read the test here: http://www.kejut.com/browsermemory

Personally, I’d much rather see the Mozilla team work on memory and, more importantly, extreme CPU overusage than release yet another major revision number in such a short time frame. What exactly are they supposed to be improving that’s left to improve, other than these two long-standing issues??
I switched to Mozilla (then eventually Firefox) during the insanity that was I.E. 6, whose borders were leakier than my home state’s. I’ve recently experienced I.E. 7 on several other people’s systems (not my own, mind you), and all my observations can be summed up as: “So, they ripped off the look and functionality of Firefox, and it now uses about the same amount of RAM, which is way too much”.

Hi Moloko,
Thanks for sharing your opinion and I agree 100%. Case in point. I went to do a simple copy - paste from OE this AM and got a out memory message. My laptop has 1 G of RAM using XP. Took a look at Firefox which had sucked up a whopping 232MB of RAM. ENOUGH ALREADY !

I have been using FF since v0.7+ and as far as i can remember, this memory leak has been an issue. I have given up trying to get through to Mozilla, i even raised a Bugzilla and tried to assist is diagnosing the root cause, but i got nowhere.
Surely there is some method or function of de-alloc ing memory useage, why is it so difficult.
I have to close my tabs and browser just so i can stop it becoming a runaway train. It seems as though FF reads the total memory on the machine its running and decides it can use 100% of it and attempts to guzzle RAM, even if you just load FF and do nothing with it, come back after 30 minutes and its FAT to the bring in RAM.
