Google – Changes To Benefit Mobile Phone Users

Posted by on Nov 6, 2007 | 2 Comments

Yesterday we learned that there will be no gPhone but rather an alliance of companies that will be producing mobile phones that should benefit consumers. Over at the Google blog there are several tell tale signs of exactly what Google hopes to accomplish which should benefit consumers, especially those here in the US. I have written before about the constraints that companies have placed on their devices like the Apple iPhone which can be used only with an AT&T subscription. Where in other countries laws have been enacted to prohibit the locking in of a phone to any one carrier.

Some of the wording over at the Google blog may give us a hint of what Google is going to try and do. Such as:

In fact, through the joint efforts of the members of the Open Handset Alliance, we hope Android will be the foundation for many new phones and will create an entirely new mobile experience for users, with new applications and new capabilities we can’t imagine today.

I thought the capabilities of the iPhone pretty much covered most of what we users wanted in a mobile phone, but it appears that Google has some futuristic ideas of what a mobile phone can do.

Android is the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices. It includes an operating system, user-interface and applications — all of the software to run a mobile phone, but without the proprietary obstacles that have hindered mobile innovation.

The word that jumps out at me in this sentence is ‘proprietary’. The hope is that if the systems will be non-propiertary we will be able to use our mobile devices with any carrier.

It’s important to recognize that the Open Handset Alliance and Android have the potential to be major changes from the status quo — one which will take patience and much investment by the various players before you’ll see the first benefits. But we feel the potential gains for mobile customers around the world are worth the effort.

The ‘status-quo’. We consumers have been hog-tied long enough by the multi-billion dollar companies. It is time for a major change. Hopefully Google and their alliance ill be able to deliver. Only time will tell.

What do you think?

Ron, I just read a very interesting article in PC Mag concerning the Google venture. It’s written by John Dvorak, and it might give you and your readers another point of view.

He also has a great read (following this article) with regards to VISTA. I almost broke out laughing at his non-pc comments … pc meaning political correctness and NOT a computer! LOL

Anyhow, enough typing … time to grab some food and visit the good folks at the AmVets for a social cocktail or two!

Oh BTW … I’m a Postal employee here in the Boston area but don’t carry a gun and never went “Postal”. It’s not allowed!
