Vista - The Best Windows Yet

With 88 million copies of Windows Vista being sold, one can only conclude that Vista must be the best Windows yet, or people wouldn’t be buying it. The 88 million figure is what Microsoft is reporting as the number of copies sold since Vista was released. Microsoft also reports an increase of revenues which they state are up 20% for Vista sales alone.
So even with all of the bad press Vista has received, it appears that we are all on our way to becoming Vista users now or in the very near future. For those of us who still use Windows XP, we will still get plenty of use out of our systems before we need to change over. If Microsoft does come out with a new operating by 2010, who knows, we might be able to skip over Vista completely.
So looking over ALL of the different operating systems, not only is Vista doing well, but so is Apple. Now that Linux is being offered by several of the major OEM’s, one could conclude that there may also be more Linux users in the future as well. Since everyone is reporting glowing sales results, one could conclude that more people are buying computers for the first time or that more homes are now multiple computer families.
Heck, I have 5 computers in my house. One even runs Vista.
The bottom line is this. It doesn’t matter which operating system you use. In fact this all may be a mute point in about 10 years or so when no operating system will even be required. Which makes one wonder. What are we going to argue about over than? I’m sure it will be something else but it may not be Windows.
I see a future when an operating system will not be necessary, and we will only need a browser machine of sorts.
What are your thoughts?
Comments welcome.

There will always be need for an operating system, as the machine would at least need some form of sophisticated boot-strap, which could be called an OS.
I do see operating systems running from a ROM, and the ROM being swapped as easily as a PC Card in a notebook computer.

If 88 million copies were sold how many were pirated, add the about of non-genuine copies to the 88 million and it make Windows Vista even more popular.

Hi Marc,
Agree. My thought is that the OS would be non-traditional compared to what we currently are using. Linux mobile? ROM based as you have stated.
Hi Zak,
That would increase the amount in use as well.

To the comment about the sales of vista i work in IT consulting and let me tell you there are very few vista boxes anywhere the only thing people are buying is the vista license because they have no choice in the windows world other than OEM which can still be purchased we buy the license and wipe out vista and install XP pro so the figures Microsoft releases are not accurate for the amount of installed copyies of Vista,Ps Vista is really in no uncertain terms the worst copy of windows every released including windows ME
