Use Microsoft Vista - Save $605 A Year

This first statement in a 21 page report sponsored by Microsoft says it all:

Reducing the Total Cost of Ownership associated with mobile PCs (notebook PCs, Tablet PCs, and Ultra-Mobile PCs) has become a critical challenge for many businesses. Sponsored by Microsoft®, GCR Custom Research and Wipro Technologies performed an independent survey on Mobile PC Total Cost of Ownership. The results of the study show that Windows Vista®, with related technologies and best practices implemented, can reduce mobile computing TCO by $605/PC annually (from $4,407 in Windows XP® to $3,802 in Windows Vista), whichis 14% lower than that of Windows XP.

I guess the only question I have is how much have you saved since dumping XP for Vista?
Comments welcome.

First, I can’t believe I got through the whole thing without hip waders.

So much of what is cited is so arbitrary. Other things cited will not be used in MOST businesses.

Example - Vista saves $37 per seat in end-of-life costs, as BitLocker allows the drives to be dispensed/recycled without any fear. I ask, how many places are there that can’t throw on a CD whichs boots and erases a hard disk while the system is sitting around waiting to be decommisssioned the next day. There are several erasing programs which are absolutely free, and pass the DoD standards. Besides being questionable, it is silly - how many companies will implement BitLocker? How many are actually using Vista Business or Ultimate, since many corporate environs will use a cheaper product when cost difference is as little as $5 per seat. Notice how MS never states how many copies of Vista Basic are being used by business? If the ‘improved security’ is the reason for a business to switch from XP, they certainly will not be using Business or Ultimate, as Basic provides this ‘benefit’. Bigger business will use Business or Ultimate, as they need domains support, but what percentage of the entire Microsoft OS audience actually uses domains?

Also, any of the Vista utilities that are touted as being a cost saving proposition are not nearly as useful as full products offered by third parties.

This is much like the OOXML controversy - it proves that MS can afford to bribe lots of people for the results it desires - nothing more.

Zero. I still use use XP and will continue to do so until I start to see REAL reasons to change. To me, Vista looks like the last M$ flop.

How about that, I can’t even remember it’s name LOL!

It’s pretty sad that Microsoft has to stoop to badmouthing its OWN product in order to get Vista to sell…I mean what, bad mouthing Linux and Macintosh isn’t good enough for them anymore?

Hello Marc, Paul and Jeremy,
Thanks for your comments.

I found the report ridiculous and extremely self serving. I also think that some one would have to be retarded to even believe what was said.

I did like the pretty pie charts! LOL

What Do You Think?
