Microsoft Patch Tuesday - When To Install

Just a quick note:
Microsoft has released an advanced notification on the next bunch of patches to released on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 which they describe as being 1 critical and 4 important releases. You can read the Microsoft Security Bulletin from here.
Which brings up another bit of advice for you auto patch people who have their systems set to get all the patches and install them automatically. I personally set my systems to ‘Download Updates For Me, But Let Me Choose When To Install Them’. Another option is to be notified of the updates only.
I normally do this for two reasons. First, most of the updates usually require a reboot to take place after the updates are installed. Second, I usually wait a few days after the updates are released to make sure nobody is reporting any problems with the fixes before installing them.
What do you do? Recommendations are welcome.
Microsoft site is here.

What do I do? Nothing. I don’t install any patches. I’m just tired of this whole computer mess. After all these years (got first IBM PC in 1983) It should be getting easier, not harder. I can’t understand why Microsoft is still in business. They should have been run out of town on a rail by now.

Hello Gary,
They can’t be run out of town on a rail. MS owns the tracks!

What a brilliant idea patch tuesday is. A guranteed chance to mess up your system once a month. Let’s call it Patch Roulette instead. There are people who say they wait to apply patches after waiting for other people to do it first and see if they have any problems. What if everybody waited for someone else to go first? That could turn into an Alphonse and Gaston routine. “You go first. Oh no, I insist you go first monsieur.” And so on.

Hi Gary,
Thankfully there are a lot of folks who take the plunge on the first day the fixes are release.
