Whether checking my own system for spyware or one of my clients, Spybot - Search & Destroy is one of the spyware products I use in conjunction with others available for free. Spybot has a new version 1.5 now available for download which adds the latest operating systems it functions with as well as some improvements to the scan engine. From its site:
We have to admit, it was delayed a few times, mostly because we always had some new feature we wanted to implement in mind, but now it’s finally here: we’re proud to announce the availability of Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5. This new version features a lot of improved detection mechanisms (which in parts were already made available through the regular 1.4 updates in the past months), improved Operating System support (Windows Vista integration, restored support for Windows 95, more compatibility with Wine, support for bootable Windows CDs), improved browser support (e.g. for immunization) and much more -
System support
- Restored Win95 compatibility
- Improved Wine compatibility
- Fixed HyperThreading issues
- Improved 64 bit immunization
- Create Portable.ini in main folder to use app folder as data folder as well
- New warnings about missing admin rights on Windows Vista
- Support for multi-line bookmarks (IE 7 / Vista)
- New Immunization for Firefox & Mozilla
- Improved Immunization for Opera
More information can be found on the Spybot Web site and also mirrors for downloading the latest version.
The newest version of Spybot - Search & Destroy can be found here.

Thanks for the heads-up, Ron, but do you know why I’m getting the browser message (paraphrasing) “This website wants to run…’QuickTimeCheck Scriptable Object’ add-on” when I come to this page? What’s different about http://www.lockergnome.com:80/nexus/blade/2007/09/04/spybot-search-and-destroy-new-version-available than the other links I clicked on in today’s newsletter?
Thanks again,
Steve

PS: I guess I was wrong–I guess ALL the links in today’s newsletter are popping up this add-on prompt. Still, do you know what it’s all about? I prefer NOT to add on add-ons, BHOs, etc., if they’re not necessary.

Hi Steve,
First of all it is not the links nor the site that is causing this. The error message you are getting appears to have something to do with Quicktime itself. If you have this on your system, I would uninstall and try a reinstall.
From what I have read this AM, it appears that the Google AdSense ads may be triggering this message.
I hope this helps. Get back to me and let us know what you find. It should be interesting to see if we can solve this, since I am sure you are not the only one who is experiencing this problem.
Curious. Are you using IE 7 by any chance?
Regards, Ron
