HDTV Question: 720P Or 1080P?

For the past few weeks or so my brother-in-law has been contemplating purchasing a big screen HDTV. He has narrowed his selection down to a Samsung DLP set after researching the heck out of it and finally making this as his final decision. But during this time he has struggled with whether to purchase a 720P or 1080P unit.
Yesterday he called me and mentioned that in the Sunday paper Best Buy had a 46″ Samsung DLP unit 720P for $899.99. See Best Buy ad here. Or the Samsung 50″ DLP unit 720P for $1,079.99 here. The Samsung DLP 50″ 1080P is priced at $1,619.99 here.
Comparing the two 50″ units for price alone means the 1080P unit is $540 more. It is also $720 less for the 46″ unit.
The unit will be used for TV and DVD watching with no gaming console connected.
So my question to you is this. Is the 1080P set worth the additional cost? What about the difference between 50″ vs 46″? Is 4″ going to make that much of a difference?
Your comments and thoughts are welcome.

Well first of all, do you have an HDDVD or Blu-ray player? If you don’t then it’s not worth getting the 1080p screen, you will simply not get the best out of it. If your DVD player supports component cables to display 1080p I wouldn’t recommend it either because in my opinion component cables don’t match an HDMI cable.
I would get the 720p system but then again it’s always nice to be prepared for the “future” when high def systems become cheaper, etc.

Hello Liquidsnake,
Thanks for the info. It seems to confirm what I have read and I have heard. The receiver he has from the cable company is a Hi-Def unit but uses component cables with no HDMI connector. Hi-Def is not available either from the cable company as of yet. His DVD player is not HD-DVD nor BlueRay capable.
I remember one instance when I prepared for the future. I bought a Quad stereo receiver because I had been told that FM stations here in the US would eventually broadcast in Quad [four signals] in the future. I am still waiting for it to happen! LOL
