There seems to be a lot of excitement over at DesktopLinux.com since their non-scientific survey has revealed an increase in folks who are using Linux. On their site they state that their latest poll results had double in the amount of responses compared to last year. In addition to the poll results, the site also covers which versions of Linux are the most popular according to those who responded to the survey.
And the winner is? Ubunutu!
Also noteworthy on the site was the following statement:
You don’t need to believe our numbers or surveys, though. Dell and Lenovo didn’t invest in pre-loading Linux desktops to win points with the cool Linux kids. Both companies did it because they want to make money with the Linux desktop. Dell, in fact, has expanded its Ubuntu Linux offerings both in the U.S. with its 1420 laptop line, in Europe, and in the Chinese office desktop market. Today, Linux desktops are a business, not just a hobby.
More information and charts are available on the DesktopLinux site located here.
What do you think? Is Linux on the move to replace Windows?
Comments welcome.

Replace may be too big of a word for a few years. But to go heads on with windows and become a big thorn in their side may be possible. Here are facts after 12,000 visits to my site,
Windows XP = 74.44 %
Windows Vista =14.24 %
Windows 2000 = 3.25 %
Mac OS =2.13 %
Unknown =2.13 %
Windows 98 =1.91 %
Linux =1.35 %
Windows ME =0.34 %
Windows 2003 = 0.22 %
The numbers are real world, real time. I track from 64 countries now. As you can see Linux has a ways to Go. Linux still is not at Windows 98 level!
