Staples Recycling Program - $10 Fee

  • No Related Post

Staples has begun a recycling program in which consumers can bring in old monitors or computers for a flat $10 each to cover the cost of recycling the units. Keyboards, mice and speakers are accepted at no cost. The recycled items can be dropped off at any Staples store in the United States during normal business hours.

For the past four years, Staples as also offered a free recycling program covering such items as cell phones, pagers and digital cameras for free, regardless of the brand or whether the device was bought at Staples or not.  Staples thus has expanded the recycling program to cover computer systems as well, again  for any make or brand, whether bought from Staples are not.

With over 1400 stores nationwide, most consumers will have a Staples store hopefully within driving distance to take advantage of this programs. This will make Staples one of the first major retailers to offer a recycling program on a daily bases.

It is good to see that consumers will now have a choice and hopefully this program will help prevent old computers from ending up in the landfills.

Comments welcome.

Ron,

Several Flaws in the Staples system, One, it cost money to get rid of your system. (yes even 10 dollars is too much). Two, It assumes that you can drive to Staples. (computers too heavy to carry on a bus). Three, It assumes that the people care about what happens to the computer and mother nature.

I have commented before, about the computers that are just sitting in front of houses on trash day, in large cities. The way large cities can solve that is too mayby make arrangments with Staples or some one else and have commputer collection days. Mayby the cities could get a discounted rate to recycle computers.

I still feel that these trash computers are a waste of educational resources. We throw out learning tools. Why? Because they are not the latest bells and whistles. Why? Because the old operating system does not support new software. Why? Because we do not think as a society about what can be better for all. Why? (I could go on forever)

The one thing that I know, these old computers will run Linux.

Yes the Staples program is great. I wish all places recycled. But I think they could do more by offering a 5 % discount on next item purchased at Staples coupon. For bringing in your computer to recycle.(Bring computer go shopping Idea), On top of the 10 dollar charge. That way you pay the recycle cost but get something for being GREEN!!!!

Just Rambling today, old computers are a love of mine and a pet peeve of mine.

Hello Kyle,
Good points. I know in CA. you pay a $25 fee when you buy the system that covers the recycling cost when you dispose of it down the road. I can agree with some of your concerns. It would be nice if Staples did spring for a discount certificate, which would make consumers most likely buy something. Kind of a drop and shop. :-)

I always thought that the prisons could be setup to take old systems, refurbish them, install Linux on them and then distribute them to the poor.

Later, Ron
