Fireproof Computer Enclosure Keeps Your Data Safe - From ioSafe

Before I go into the story behind ioSafe, many of us are familiar with the tales we have heard about how people like HP, Apple, Adidas and so forth, were all started with folks coming up with an idea in their garages. I have spent 100’s of hours in my garage. Nothing! So when I read about ioSafe and the computer enclosure they have come up with I said to myself, ‘how come I didn’t think of that.” :-)

So when I took a look at the ioSafe companies website and saw what they had to offer, I was impressed. Over the course of my career I have always found that SOHO users are the most vulnerable when it comes to disasters striking their businesses. Backing up data sometimes takes a back seat and everyone is crambling to keep the company moving ahead. Only when a disaster strikes is the thought of a backup than seem important. Plus most SOHO users who backup their systems keep the backup disks right in the office. If there were to be a fire, all would be lost.

I still recall many years ago watching the tube, and a fire was sweeping through Laguna Hills, CA. Scary to say the least. Pictured was a house whos roof was on fire and a man rushing back into his home, retrieving something that must of been of value, for him to risk his neck for. One of the reporters on the ground caught up with the man and asked what he had retrieved. The man was a dry cleaning business owner and he went back in to get his backup tapes of all of his records.

ioSafe offers a computer enclosure that they state is 100% fireproof and will protect your data to temperatures of 1700 degrees. They also describe their product as:

ioSafe Advantage: Reliable Airflow Cooling

The ioSafe product is fireproof and can keep your data safe because of its FloSafe vents and DataCast insulation. The patent-pending FloSafe vents allow for cool airflow inside the ioSafe data storage unit during normal operation. But when the room temperature rises above 200°F, the heat triggers the fire resistant FloSafe vents to automatically shut and seal, cutting off outside heat and protecting the disks held inside the fire resistant box. This auto-detection of heat and auto-closure of vents do not rely on electrical power.

The steel box is coated with ioSafe’s proprietary DataCast insulation. It has been designed specifically for hard drive survivability in case of fire. The DataCast formulation forms a chemical bond with water molecules that, at temperature above 160°F, releases water vapor to limit the internal temperature of the unit. This enables the ioSafe data storage product to protect your data from heat damage while the unit is engulfed in fire.

ioSafe also has other products available to protect from floods, building collapses and also data backup and recovery systems. You can take a look at all of their products here.
