Dell + Unbuntu = Rumor, Which Reminds Me Of A Segment Of All In The Family

  • No Related Post

The latest rumor comes from an alleged employee of Dell who is spilling the beans and that Dell is ready to introduce its Unbuntu systems which are to premier on May 24, 2007. The nameless employee has sent this email to only a select few who have chosen to share the message with us all.

Which reminded me of an old segment of All In The Family which has Archie coming home with a bottle of vino saying his company will not be going on strike. Seems that Archie decided to use the executive bathroom on a whim and while using the facilities, overheard a conversation between the big bosses saying they can’t afford a strike. Edith asks Archie how does he know that what he heard is the truth to which Archie explains, “men don’t lie in toilets.’ Several hours later Archie receives a phone call from his union that they are going on strike to which Edith states, “men do lie in toilets.”

What I liked about the secret Dell email is that the writer states that Dell expects to sell 1% of its computers using Linux for a total of 20,000 units per year. Which means that Dell is only planning on selling two million systems for the entire year? It might as well close up shop now.

But the nice thing about this rumor is that we will have a short wait to find out if it is true or not. :-)

Comments welcome.

Perhaps the employee is one of those who cannot do math? On the other hand, maybe they should just ’stifle’.

You hear something cool like “Dell is selling Ubuntu on its computers!”
This is big news to people. Then you find out its only 20,000 units going to be sold a year? Is this worldwide? pfft.. That is like 50 or so units a day, give or take with holidays.. The only one benefiting from this is Dell’s stock market share.. What a Joke!

Hi Marc and f0rw4rd.sl4sh,
Thanks for the comment. It does appear that someone can’t count and needs a math lesson. I don’t think Dell would even fool with selling 20k units a year.
If we don’t see Dell announce the Ubuntu systems by the 24th, then this email was a 100% hoax. :-)

There are three types of people: those who are good at math, and those who are not.

Since Dell sells almost 40 million systems a year, I have to say the employee falls in the latter category.

I hope this is true. Recently replaced a computer that had pista installed on the machine. The program is so paranoid it is impossible to do any thing. Need a system that allows you to do your work and not worry about every key stroke.

What Do You Think?
