Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack #1 - October or November Release Date?

You have to love this cat and mouse game Microsoft is playing on whether there will be a need for a service pack this year or not. In a previous article [here], I had mentioned that Microsoft representatives had stated that there would be no service pack, instead a series of hotfixes would be applied to Vista to correct some issues.
The contention is that Microsoft feels that Vista was so good right from the start that no service pack would be needed. There is also some discussion on the Internet that Microsoft may also feel reluctant to use a service pack that incorporates fixes for all problems, since some fixes only apply to specific situations. As you may recall, both service packs 1 and 2 for Windows XP had some undesired results after consumers installed the fixes.
The latest rumor is that service pack 1 for Windows Vista may be coming in October or November of this year. The CEO of Intel during a phone conference may have spilled the beans when he accidentally mentioned the October/November release dates. [Article here].But Microsoft is still playing hard ball and doesn’t want to confirm any specific release date.
Which brings up another thought. Was this actually a slip of the tongue by the Intel CEO or was it planned? Microsoft is a marketing genius when it comes to Windows. They are aware that many consumers and businesses are waiting for a service pack before they would even consider installing Vista on their machines. An October/November release would be ideal for the computer OEM’s who would love to have a highly profitable holiday season.
So what do you think? Will Microsoft come out with a service pack for Vista just before the holiday buying season?
Comments welcome.

I will wait for a service pack for windows vista to buy it, for now I will still use my pc with windows XP SP2, which works very well. No need to hurry and buy something that could not work with your hardware due to the lack of drivers.

I had finally come to the realization that I needed a new computer. The old one I had had become to slow for the things I was trying to do. My old system had windows XP and it worked like a charm. The new computer came with Vista (which I tried to change to XP but no new computer has this operating system installed anymore). Within the first few days, I had to reboot the computer to an earlier date because of software incompatibility, several times. Very frustrating. A couple of weeks later I had to contact the manufacturer because Internet explorer had crashed and would no longer work, I couldn’t even use any of the software on the computer which brought me to a screeching halt. I had to reset the computer to factory condition, which meant I lost all my files and pictures that were on the computer. This issue was determined a result of Vista and even the tech that was helping me said it was the first time he had even seen this with Vista. Nobody can figure out why this has happened.
I will certainly recommend that everyone wait to purchase Vista. The graphics look good, but the incompatibility and constant lockups is not worth the frustration that it creates.
The funny thing is, this is exactly why I decided to purchase a new computer in the first place. A viscous circle.

I installed Windows Vista Ultimate (32 bit edition) on my dell D810 laptop on the release day and to date i’ve only experienced 1 single issue which was a problem with my Sony Ericson software not installing under windows vista. For me this isnt a huge trainsmash because I have numerous machines. My hardware is by no means great, and only just scores 4 on the performance rating. Since installing a readyboost drive i’ve noticed a huge performance boost and to be honest am contemplating installing vista on my other workstations as well!
Service pack or no service pack, I dont care, the OS works well for me! Good work Microsoft!

Hello Richard,
You seem to be in good company. In another article I wrote the response was very positive and Vista users like you were having no problems. I am glad to see that you are enjoying the new OS.
Thanks for the comment, Ron

Windows Vista is not perfect as Microsoft says. The 64 bit version of Vista spurts out errors once you install 4-8 gigs of ram on your system. Whats up with the startup? it looks lame with just a bar, why not put up a vista logo like windows XP had? Cisco VPN does not work at all on the 64 bit version of vista, The 32 bit version installs it but does not run it correct. When it comes to applications that were used great on XP now have install issues. Dell and HP anre screwing themselves over by selling computers with Vista now. Too many issues pending, Microsoft needs to stop picking their noses and fix problems like this or Some other company will come out with a perfected OS like MacOS and people will start going a different route. If Microsoft wants business from the large companies they better truly perfect their product.

By the way. Windows is way overpriced for a buggy OS. Get Linux! it’s free and it’s perfect.

Hello Frank,
Thank you for your comments and observations. It should be interesting to see how many folks try Linux or go to a MAC. This year should tell the tale.

The following comments and interpretations are from my own personal experience and how I perceived what I read here. This may not necessarily reflect anyone else’s interpretation or Vista experience.
So before you take it upon yourself to flame me let me just say. If you feel the urge to flame. Go outside, stoke up a charcoal barbeque pit, squirt a bottle of charcoal starter fluid on the coals, wait about 60 seconds then your face real close to the charcoal and drop a lit match on soaked briquettes. Get the point?

From the reviews above it seems everyone must be living in a fairytale world. From this user’s chair, Microsoft Windows Vista has more bugs than a bait shop and more problems than a math book.
Microsoft insulted the public by releasing such a shoddily written unuser friendly P.O.S. like Vista.
To add insult to injury, companies like Dell and HP shoved Vista down everyone’s throat that wanted to buy a new computer. Shame on them!
More bugs than a bat shop? More problems than a math book you say. Let’s take a closer look at those statements.
How about after performing file manipulation like copying files from one location to another Vista sometimes spits out the message that the delete operation is denied because you need administrative rights. Log on as with an account that has admin rights and try again.
Well, I am always logged on to my machine with administrative rights.
To delete the unwanted folder I had to reboot the computer.
I have a Dell XPS410 running Vista Ultimate 32bit on a Core2 Duo e6600 2.4g processor w\4 gig of high performance ram along with an nVidia 7900GS w/256mb DDR3 memory and 3 250g and 1 500g internal sata drives as well as an external 500g MyBook. You’d think that would be more than enough horsepower to handle almost any system demand right? WRONG!!!!
If you have a Core2 Duo configuration, load up the CPU/RAM gadget in the sidebar. Then open a My Computer window (WinFlag E), a lot of the times you will see the CPU on Core CPU1 peg at 100% while just trying to open up the My Computer window.
Now, go ahead and try to expand a drive tree under Computer in the Folders list. Watch as the happy little Aero donut spins it brains out and nothing happens for sometimes up to 30 or more seconds.
Now try to expand a folder that you just took a smoke break for because you were waiting for the drive to expand. Light up another some, you’re going to be waiting again. I’m not saying this happens every time, but it does happen at inconvenient times like when you need to access a file and print it real quick to take to an important meeting with you.
Again, as you watch your CPU gadget, notice how it pegs Core1 at 100% sometimes while trying to open something.
You know you Vista stuck it to you when you go to open an app and BOTH Cores peg at 100%. Like they’re trying to figure out who should have right of way. Then there’s the momentary mouse pointer freezes.
Don’t get me wrong, there are things about Vista that I like, for instance when you’re navigating your slide bar up and down a folder tree that has multiple nested subs, Vista adjusts the folder view to home to the left or right as the case necessitates. Or the fact that if your DSL modem and wireless router needs to be reset, the operation can be performed in flight. Meaning you don’t have to shut Windows down, power or off your box before resetting your connection like you had to do in XP.
The engineering team that, in their infinite wisdom, thought it was a good idea to introduce the Windows Media Center to the scene should be shot.. TWICE! Or better yet, how about chop off their fingers, and cut their vocal chords so they can’t type or use Dragon Speak to program anything ever again.
In my opinion, VISTA is the biggest piece of CRAP I’ve seen as far as OSs go. Linux is looking more and more attractive every day.
And Microsoft would have everyone believe that Vista is the hottest thing since sliced bread.
Fughetaboutit!!!
REMEMBER! The biggest hoax the devil ever perpetrated was convincing the world he didn’t exist!

for anyone looking to upgrade i suggest staying with XP till vista SP1 comes out iam pretty confident they will release a SP from what ive seen theres realy nothing major wrong but theres TONES of little things witch can get very annoying i would bet on a early november release and an advertising push to upgrade between then and the holidays
after SP1 comes out vista will be worth it and for the gamers out there even more so by then u will start seeing DX10 games

I agree with what Me said.
Useing 813MB of ram at the desktop made me look twice and I have a nvidia 7600GT anyway yes indeed I watched my dual core AMD peg the 100% mark on both cores. This does not happen in windows XP never! I have 32 bit VISTA home premium with 4GB DDR2 RAM. VISTA will eat this and the CPU strange? I know I have enough PC power. Kind of shocked Microsoft’s next OS would act this way and try to eat my PC for lunch maybe they will have a fix for this in SP1? If I would have known then what I know now I never would have purchased VISTA. I also noticed VISTA is very very slow at some tasks like file extractions, disk defragmentation. As of today Im installing XP! To be fair I gave VISTA over 30 days of use and I see no real need for it or reason. VISTA is garbage! I will use XP until my computer no longer works. VISTA is the biggest P.O.S. I have ever used I will never install VISTA on my computer again! I have my 18 windows XP recovery cd’s beside me problem solved.

I have been using computers since the release of Windows 98. My old computer running XP pro had become too slow for my video editing so I purchased a new machine with Windows Vista home premium edition pre installed. I can honestly say it was a huge mistake. A lot of my (very exspensive) software was not Vista compatible and I’ve had to find many work arounds to get things working. Fortunately I am fairly computer minded, but for someone buying a computer for the first time Vista could be a complete nightmare. Computers are designed to make life easier…… Yeah right. Don’t get me wrong Vista has good points the “Aero” interface for example is great, but I.M.H.O. the down points far out weigh the good points. Waiting 7 years for an opperating system with so many bugs is a scam. I am going back to XP Pro until Microsoft can (hopefully) sort out the problems. Please note that I do realise that not all the problems I’ve encountered are totally down to Vista, software developers also have a job to do, but it’s back to XP for me.

Hello JJ,
Thanks for your comments. It is appreciated. Many have returned to XP as well.
Hi Jeff,
Good observation. It is surprising how many of the developers didn’t know MS was coming out with a new OS! As you stated, all is not the fault of MS.

Ron,
GEEEE WIZZZZ
This is a bash Vista blog. Fun to read!!! The one about flaming your face is good, except use gasoline it burns hotter and faster.
I myself live in a fairytale world, My Vista is running flawless. Not a problem except the media center. I just turned it off and have no problems. Vista boots faster than Xp. Vista is very, very, stable. Vista is learning how I use the computer, as I use Vista, the more it responds better to my needs. Seems that Vista has the ability to adjust itself to your most used programs and gives different priorities to programs. The readyboost is a dream (fairytale) Cheap memory boost. I am not a microsoft fan, but…. Vista is not a bad operating system,
I read that microsoft has sold around 40,000,000 copies. Has anyone done the math. I am using 259.00 dollars as a hypothetical number.
40,000,000 X $259.00 = 10,360,000,000 Dollars.
That kinda makes me feel, ahhhhh poor, I wish that microsoft would adopt me.
Oh by the way I do not have a super powered,, dual processor every gadget and whistle computer. I have a AMD sempron 3000+, 2 gigs of ram, 250 mg harddrive, Nvidia geforce integrated 6100, and Vista works good. As good as my XP.
But as I always have said, I still love my Windows 98. But I live in fairytale land.

O great, i was planning to buy windows vista too…
ok if you get windows vista now when sp1 comes out will you get a free update, or will you have to go buy it? if you have to go buy it then f’that ill probably end up getting it illegally.
Anyways windows vista attracts me cause of the eye candy, i won’t lie, the transparency the animated wallpaper on ultimate, the start menu, so very attracting.

XP sp2, in the last 2 weeks my mouse began to freeze momentarily,
then more frequently, as time has gone on, some indications of moveing over links to trigger it, the freeze is about 2 seconds or so in length, and now 2 or 3 times in a row, half to one second between freezes, ALONG with automatic clicks, sie, I hit a link in a page then it starts to open and then immediatly returns to the first page, or opens anotehr window, or goes somewhere else altogether,. ALSO the mouse will sometimes totally dissappear and reappear 2 or 3 seconds later in another part of the screen, AND occasioanly typeing changes happen, settings occasionaly change,
I am fed up with MS!!!!
used all the spyware scanners and current avast, no luck,
I was hit with something and I cant find it, I found the E-card in teh spring one month before the antivirus companies found it and even admit to it being in the wild, I cought it tracked it to NY and then finaly to a damn MUSLIM
this one is deeper, not willing to upgrade to vista after working on vista for too many people… if anyone has found traces of this problem since I see similarities in it going back for many years, it is probably 2 things, a bug in the system AND an EXPLOIT of that BUG…. SO there must be a fix…

I can’t believe so many people are having trouble with Vista. You must all be idiots, or you’re just unlucky. I work in a large electronics chain, selling computers, and we never have problems with Vista. The demo machines have tons of pirated software on them that all works flawlessly. We’ve even converted our store-use machines to Vista, and they run great.
I don’t care what these stupid reviews say, LOOK AT BENCHMARKS. AMD outperforms Intel on more than 90% of applications.
Thank you, come again.
