Windows Vista Tweaks – Black Viper Recommendations – Killing Some Services
I did a posting previously on the fact that Black Viper was getting his website back up and running, after taking a sabbatical for some two years. [See post here.] I also had mentioned that he would also be updating his site to include tweaks and tips for Vista users. So today I took a look at his site and sure enough, he has the tweaks for services up and running. He also has posted in a orderly fashion what he recommends that the settings should be as well as what Microsoft sets as the default.
So what are services? Basically it is a application that starts when Windows starts up and runs in the background as long as you have Windows running. Some services are absolutely needed for Windows to run properly. But some services can be turned off by the user since they may not be needed.
BIG WARNING! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Tweaking any settings in any Windows operating system can be hazardous to your mental health, especially of Windows doesn’t function properly. My opinion is this. Those folks up in Redmond are pretty smart and for the most part, tune Windows to work properly. Now this isn’t to say that some services that auto start may not be needed. So before you start tweaking, let me give you some advice:
- Create a restore point just in case something doesn’t go right.
- Only do one [a] tweak at a time and reboot the system.
- Write down the changes that you make in case you need to revert back to a old setting.
- Follow directions exactly. You will note that BV recommends using services.msc and not msconfig in run command.
- For everyone to enjoy the tweaks you must have administrative rights.
- If you are not sure whether to try a tweak, don’t.
BV also lists on his site other tweaks to try. Your performance and mileage may vary, so be careful.
Do I use any of these tweaks. Nope. Why not? If it ain’t broke……..
Comments welcome.
