Windows XP - SP2 “Access denied” or “The network path was not found” error message

  • No Related Post

Oh the joys of networking. One of the most common error messages that people receive when they are trying to manage computers on a network in which the system uses Windows XP with Service Pack #2 is “Access Denied” or “The network path was not found.” Though the causes can be many, the most common fix is to read Microsoft’s KB840634 article which takes you through the steps of correcting this annoying error.

The fault is most likely Windows firewall which may need to be changed. Microsoft describes the fix as:

“On the remote Windows XP SP2-based computer, modify Windows Firewall to permit incoming TCP traffic on port 445:
1.Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2.Click Security Center, and then click Windows Firewall.

3.Click the Exceptions tab, click to select the File and Printer Sharing check box, and then click Edit.

4.Click to select the TCP 445 check box, click Change scope, and then take one of the following actions:

Click MY network [subnet] only.

Click Custom List and then type the IP addresses that you want to manage this computer.

5.Click OK four times.”

Still having problems? Read the entire article here and try some of the other fixes. Good luck and happy networking.

While what you speak of usually works, I have experienced a problem which can [in my point of view] only be described as grunging of something in the namespace, as none of the standard stuff in the knowledge base articles, or anything I have read in any book will take care of it. It has happened twice on my home network, and 3 times on small networks I administer for others.

The same error message as above, but nothing seems to fix it… until I renamed the network, and reset all computer names. Each time this has fixed the problem.

Hi Marc,
Thanks for the reminder. I have had to do this myself a few times for clients.

Also I have found is that if you use the network wizard, it seems to me IMHO, that it causes more harm than good. :-) Especially since I have seen some people that have tried using the wizard over and over until nothing works.

I still do it the old fashion way, manually.

Thanks, Ron

Hello suneel sharma,
May I suggest that you post your problem in the LG forums. I am sure one of he resident experts will be able to assist you:

I believe i am facing a situation that Mark Klink and Ron S. both refer to. I have a small network w/ 3 xp’s and one ME behind a Linksys router that all have internet access, no firewalls, can ping each other, in the same workgroup, but cannot connect “my network places” nor share the printer on the ME. I have spent hours trying to straighten this out.

Excuse the simplistic question, but …

How do I change the network name? Is this the workgroup? Renaming the computers (I have already tried this) is, of course, quite simple.

I must be missing the obvious, or???

Rob

Hi Rob

I normally do this with the network disconnected.

Open System in Control Panel.

On the Computer Name tab, click Change

Under Member of, click Workgroup, type the name of the workgroup that you want to join, In your case, change the name to the new workgroup you wish to use. and then click OK.

Side note - ME has always been a poop-head when working correctly with others.

Good luck.

Thanks,

I’ll give that a try. Maybe it’s time to scrap the ME

Rob

Sheesh,

I had two xp’s seeing each other, when the 3rd came online “path not found” returns.

I am updating ME to xp so can’t say yet, but this looks like the same problem.

byw, the there are two hubs as well.

Rob

This is the 2nd time I renamed the network and out of curiosity connected the other pc first this time. File sharing worked until I connected the 3rd and the system became inaccessible again.

Rob

Hi Rob,
See how it works with XP instead of ME.

Just curious. Why 2 hubs?

distance and previous setup - used to have 5 pcs

Router - - - - laptop winxp
|- - - - - - -Hub - - - - PCwinxp
| |- - - - - - Previous PC win98 (not connected)
|
|- - - - - - - Switch - - - PCwinxp
|- - - - - - PCwinME - in process of upgrade
|
|- - - - Printer shared

I’ve renamed 3 times - and for a while it works with 1 pc

Rob

i have 3 computers connected to a hub and the internet is connected into the hub as well whan i try to acess the computer through the view my networked computers it still says that the network path cant be found i have tried changint the computres names and switched to another network but nothing works all the computers run win xp

Error is 0×00000005 unable to access or access denied

Thanks for all the info.

I have also written a post about this here: http://randomtech.blogspot.com/2007/07/network-path-was-not-found-error-on-win.html

Hope it helps.

A solution (there could be several causes)

* On the target machine (the one you’re trying to connect to) open up Services, under Administrative Tools in the Start Menu.
* Scroll down to the Computer Browser service.
* If it is Disabled or set to Manual, set it to Automatic.
* Then start it. It may stop immediately again, but this is OK.
* At this point try to connect to the target machine.

If it still doesn’t work, you can try the following:

* open up Network Connections, under Control Panel.
* Right click on your network adapter and click on Properties.
* Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click on Properties.
* Click on Advanced, and click on the WINS tab.
* Even if it is set to Default, set the radio button to Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
* Press OK on each screen until everything’s closed.
* Go back to the client machine and try again.
* You should be able to connect!

If it still doesn’t work:

* Go back to the Services window and find the service named Routing and Remote Access.
* Double-click on it, set it to Manual, and stop it.
* Close Services and try to connect from your client machine again.

I had the same problem however the fix was the firewall settings in McAfee security center. I checked the boxes for Windows file sharing and also the box for port 445 and several documents that were stuck in the print queue of the remote machine printed immediately (showed shared printer offline). This functionality had been working and I never changed anything in McAfee, so I can only assume that some update to either XP or McAfee caused the problem.

thanks but problem still remain. So give me perfect solution for same

when i connect another pc whan the error massage the network path not found. but my pc is connect one -another .ping is reply.what is broblem? os is win xp sp2.

What Do You Think?
