Another Rumor - HP To Buy Symantec?

Is HP getting ready to make a play to buy Symantec Corp? Will the #1 PC company scoop up a ailing company that has pulled some bone head moves during the past several years? Can HP bring back some credibility to the once fine Norton line of products?
You gotta love this stuff. Why would HP want to buy Symantec?
- HP may see this as a golden opportunity to compete with Microsoft in the A/V protection market.
- Now that HP has pulled away from Dell and it appears they may be able to retain their #1 spot for a long while, they may be looking for ways to diversify and increase their revenues.
- They have learned over the years that they can just about giveaway their printers and that the real money is in selling ink cartridges!
- It is a slow news day in silicon valley and someone thought they would stir things up with another rumor.
I personally like all of the above. HP is still pissed at Dell for coming out with their own line of printers. I recall that when Michael and company decided to have Lexmark make Dell branded printers HP pulled their products off the Dell shelf. HP now has the bucks to pull off a buyout to further thumb their nose at Dell and say ‘we will bury you’ ala Khrushchev.
Or maybe it is just that, a slow news day.

Well I don’t know where computer world got their info, but mine actually came from someone who works at Symantec.

I see no benefit for HP to buy Norton, unless perhaps it plans to distribute it on all of its computers for free.
Norton lost the respect of pretty much all computer experts years ago. AntiVirus programs such as Kapersky and Nod32, even FREE AntiVirus programs, such as AVG and AntiVir, consistently out perform Norton in tests.
Buying Norton would bring more trouble than good.

Hi Matt P,
I tend to agree. With Symantec now entering what amounts to a pissing contest over Vista, I see no benefit at all, even if HP decided to give away Symantec products.
Thanks for your comments, Ron
