Run Windows Programs On Linux - CrossOver Linux -But Does It Work?

Linspire has announced that they will begin offering CrossOver Linux through Click-N-Run starting immediately. CrossOver Linux allows Windows programs to run in a Linux environment. Though I haven’t personally tried the software product myself, the folks at Linspire describes the software as:
“CrossOver Linux allows you to install many popular Windows productivity applications, plugins and games in Linux, without needing a Microsoft Operating System license. CrossOver includes an easy to use, single click interface, which makes installing a Windows application simple and fast. Once installed, your application integrate seamlessly with your Gnome or KDE environment. Just click and run your application, exactly as you would in Windows, but with the full freedom of Linux.”
Cost of CrossOver is $39.95. But the big questions is does it work?
So I did a Google search and found a lot of Linux sites or sites from Codeweavers the makers of CrossOver, with glowing reports akin to the 2nd coming. Which is nice. But what I would like is some real true stories from people who have actually used CrossOver.
So if you have, please post your comments on what you like and didn’t like about the software. I’m all ears. TIA.

I’m trying out Crossover Linux. I used it to install World of Warcraft on my computer, which runs Ubuntu, and found that the installation does not properly render graphics in the game. Did it install seamlessly? Yes. Does it run well? No.
I’m going to try Crossover with a few other Windows applications, and see how it goes. If I like it, I’ll fork out the $40. I have found it much easier to have a dual-boot WinXP/Ubuntu machine than to try workarounds to get Windows-only programs to run in Linux.

Hi Patti,
I appreciate you letting us know your experience with Crossover Linux. If it won’t properly render games like Warcraft, it wouldn’t do me much good as well. Thanks again, Ron

Ron,
Crossover Office may not be what you are looking for in that category, though the support for rendering varies on the application. Take a look at Cedega from TransGaming which is a version that was created solely for support of games.
I have personally played Morrowind and WoW inside of Cedega almost flawlessly. (I had to tweak one setting on Morrowind)
