Apple – Refurbished Systems – One Year Warranty

Posted by on Mar 23, 2007 | 6 Comments

The Internet is being bombarded with talk about Microsoft Windows Vista and there are plenty of different views with both pros and cons of the new operating system. Some are looking at a alternatives to Windows, whether it be Linux or an Apple box.

Let me first say that I know nothing about Apple except for what I have read. But in my surfing I landed at the Apple store, which also sells refurbished units. And knowing that Apple systems are more pricey than their PC counterparts, one of the systems caught my eye because it seemed to me that it was priced fairly.

The unit is a Refurbished iMac 17-inch 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Combo Drive, 512MB (2x256MB) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300), 160GB Serial ATA hard drive, 24x Combo Drive, Intel GMA 950 graphics with 64MB of shared memory, Built-in AirPort Extreme and Built-in iSight Camera for $849.00. Link here.

That was quick. As of 4-23-07, 2130 hrs. CST, Apple was sold out of these units.

So my question is this: Does this system seemed priced correctly? With its added features is this a good deal or not?

Like I said, I know nothing about Apple systems. But I must admit this did pique my curiosity. :-)

Comments, as always, are welcome.

PS Please do not make this an Apple vs. PC topic.

Not only are their refurbs usually priced very well you often get additional software with them. If someone bought the system with something preinstalled like Aperture, you’ll get those cds or dvds with it. The system is checked out, physically cleaned, the drive is wiped, and a factory OS install is put on the drive but for some reason they still include everything that was bought during the original sale, like additional preinstalled software for instance. My only gripe is they don’t let you request which software you want. ;)

As I write this, the link shows the items are no longer available, so someone thinks it was a great deal. Apples cannot be compared to PCs [oranges, forgive me, had to do it] but this seems like it was reasonable, considering what new Apples go for. I’m waiting for a killer deal on a G5, then I’ll bite.

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for your insight on the Apple systems. It is appreciated.

    Marc,
That was quick. That model is gone already and so was the iMac at $549. Only stuff left is very high priced. :-)

keep an eye on that ‘specials’ area – they put those iMac refurbs up all the time. If you see the 20″ that is a much better deal when the price is good.

one note – There is an ‘education’ iMac – this looks like that – the system you referenced has a ‘combo’ drive – it can only burn CDs not DVDs.

It will still run windows faster than any PC you ever had, but its worth checking out the Mac OS too . . .

also keep in mind that new Apple systems are coming out in april, so there will be even better deals on refurb stuff afterwards . . .

    Hi Bryan,
Thanks for the information. It may be worth waiting until after April for better deals. :-)
