Gateway To Be Scooped Up By Acer? Please Say It Isn't So!

Start Rant:

There is a nasty rumor circulating that Gateway computers may be bought by Acer. Why the word nasty?

No offense, Acer, but I wouldn’t buy a product from your company if it was being offered for free with a $100 rebate thrown in. Over the years I have had the misfortune of using some of your products and they are junk. In fact, I take back the ‘no offense’ statement and hope you do take offense.

And I have also had the misfortune of trying to work on your computer systems. I’d rather be strangled to death with razor wire than to experience not only poor quality products but also tech support personnel who couldn’t find their butt without a map!

Hello, Gateway. I know you are having problems. But you still build a good quality computer and your tech support people provide good service. I’d rather see your company file for bankruptcy than to have your systems drug through the mud with an Acer name plate. Hang in there, Gateway!

Rant off.

Comments welcome.

I feel that Gateway is still in the turn around mode, They still have upper management to thin out and more overhead cost that needs to be thinned. They have the potiential and I feel will make the turn around. They are going to have to hurt some feelings, If you work for them and not prodictive, then out you go.
Gateway still has a few years of extra cah to play with, If people can be less short sighted and more long term sighted. Then they can see that it is possible. They have a good product, I have used several and worked on many. Acer is not worth the price of beans in Bangcok as they say. Seems that Gateways main problems may be the enthusiasm of share holders, for acquisition.

Also did not Lap Shun Hui offer 450 million not long ago. They turned that down, I see (I hope) a future for Gateway,

Now if only I owned Gateway, I could finish pushing Dell out of the US. and …………………

    Hi Derek,
Thanks for your comments. And for letting us know that the Acer you have has been reliable for you.

Right now I am using a Gateway GT4310, AMD Athlon 64 X2, 1GB RAM, 200GB HD, ATI X1300 w/256MB RAM, DVD-RW and CD-RW. WIN XP Media Center Edition(PRO), and my monitor is an ACER AL1914 LCD. All of this has
been doing my work without a service call for almost 2 years now. How can I say anything about either company? On another note, my Altec_Lansing ACS410 speakers w/subwoofer have been in continous use since I bought my 1st Gateway in 1997. If it works, don’t fix it.

    Good Day,
I also have to be one to stick up for Acer. I understand that the “Rumor” is going to become fact.

I do Concert and Event photography here in the Detroit Area, and both myself and my field photographers use Acer Notebooks. I have had several ACER products over the years and have always been happy with them. Currently we use 6 of the “Low End” Acer laptops and I am pleased as punch with them. For about 60 percent of the cost of comparable models from Toshiba, Sony and IBM, These units do EVERYTHING I need them to do and give me not a hiccup.

I did have to deal with customer service. I messed up one of the units, I wont go into details, but suffice it to say that it was totally my fault and no way a manufacturing or product fault. I was honest with their customer service people in explaining what I did, I shipped my unit off to them, and less than 4 days later had a BRAND new replacement laptop. Granted, Mine was only 5 months old, but to send a brand new unit was actually above what I expected.

    They Have Kudos from me….
My only concern is seeing another American company buy the farm.

I bought a desk top and a lap top from Gateway last year. I purchased a 4 yr warranty. I cannot begin to tell you my horrors fo gateway and the service I’ve had to deal with. Now, they are refusing to honor my extended warranty. They tell you one thing and do another without documenting, which leaves it your word against theirs. I will never again purchase a Gateway …I have spread the word to all my friends and they are staying away from Gateway. I still have 2 computers sitting here that won’t work..my husband wants to throw them away and buy a Dell. I wish someone had a class action suit I could join.

    Hi Toni,
Sorry to hear about the problems you are having getting support for your Gateway systems.

  • Sheila

I bought a Gateway/Acer desktop over 15 months ago and I have had nothing but trouble. Got home about 3 weeks ago to find it DOA….. just stopped working. I’ve already sent it in once and it looks like it needs to go again. Seriously considering going to the Mac store this weekend and taking the dive … just done with the crap.

    Hi Sheila,
Let us know if you do decide to get a Mac.
