Dell High End Computers Don't Work With Vista – Yet!

Posted by on Feb 26, 2007 | 13 Comments

If you take a look at Dell’s website and check out their high end systems, you will notice that the systems are still running Windows XP and not Vista. Also of note, there is nothing mentioned about future upgrade disks being provided for Vista.

Dell does have a message posted which states:

“Windows VistaTM Coming Soon
While Dell continues to validate the compatibility of Windows Vista with popular gaming software & accessories, we will continue to offer XPS 710 customers Windows® XP operating systems.

Absolute Control Over Entertainment
Offering easy photo editing, video management, access to online content providers, optional TV tuner1, DVD playing and more, Media Center helps you turn your PC into a complete entertainment solution. ”

Seems that even Dell can’t get the correct drivers to support Vista for their hardware configurations. Which is a good indication that us ordinary folks may have trouble also. Though most new operating when first released are expected to have some compatibility issues as well as some delayed hardware drivers, it is still amazing to me that some hardware vendors have taken their sweet time releasing Vista drivers. I have said this before, for 5 years we knew Vista was coming, why was it such a BIG surprise to the hardware manufactures?

Comments welcome.

I purchased an XPS 710 in March of this year, and never received my Vista upgrade. I was an avid user of DELL products before this, and over the years have thrown thousands into their coffers.

The number of hoops to jump through only to find out I still could not get the Vista Home premium upgrade I’d paid for, were all for not, and ultimately and foolishly I went out and paid for a copy. After doing so, I found out that this practically brand spanking new Quad core machine had upgrade nightmares with Vista. How is this possible more than 6 months into this OS’s lifecycle, and after all of the beta time?

DELL and it’s hardware vendors really put it to the consumers on this one. I may well have purchased my last DELL machine.

    Hi Kevin,
It is strange that with all of the testing that went and also Dell getting Vista in November, that they were not aware that the XPS systems were not compatible with Vista.
    Thanks for your comments, Ron

Best one I’ve seen is Mess With Words (Cydia for $5).. Place any combo of tiles (correct words or not) and then press play. Will tell you if the words is not a real word then asks if you want to play it anyway. Will tell you if an opponent is cheating too

I’m an addict to that game… My best word was crazes… got me 111 points :)

Just use the “Ultimatfree” iphone app. It will ruin Words With Friends for you, forever. All you do is take a snapshot of the board and load it into Ultimatfree, which then runs OCR on the entire board and crunches all the possible positions and combinations. It will blow your mind. I don’t even play Words With Friends anymore because of it.

You’re not supposed to admit to using it. :)

i am also hooked on the game. after you have played someone a couple times you can get a pretty good idea if they are using another app. I have other friends who would never or maybe hardly ever cheat. they tend to be more fun to play with in the first 3/4 of the board, but the ext-app style is best for killing the long drawn-out endings. I tend to play with whatever rules my opponent is projecting, but would rather keep all brain powered.

Coming from an Android user, widgets are definitely extremely useful. I have clock/weather on my main home screen, and I have my other widgets on the left home screens like Springpad, Google Voice, Docs, etc.

IOS copied several things that Android has had forever. The iPhone though does have a sort of “widget” but is limited to a number on top of a icon which could display number of emails or text messages.

If you jailbreak an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, you are able to install something out of Cydia: SBSettings. It works almost the same way.

I don’t know if I can agree with this as even a new iPhone user and no where near a “power” user I would say that I can see EVERYTHING mentioned in this article and them some right on my first page. I have my calendar, the weather, and not to mention all of my news (but I really use Twitter for that), my music (both Pandora and my iPod music), and I have not even gone pass the 33rd row of apps…
