Vista Ultimate Extras - DreamScene Now Available For Download - Preview Only

Vista Ultimate Extra has made available the PREVIEW release of DreamScene for download for those who have the Ultimate Edition of Vista. Why Microsoft is releasing a Preview instead of the full versions in unknown.
So I fired up Vista Ultimate and downloaded DreamScene Preview. Plus a few other updates were available as well.
To get DreamScene working you need to go to Control Panel - Personalization - Desktop Background and from the drop down menu select Windows DreamsScene Content, which currently is only one [1] single mpg clip about 23.5MB in size. And you need to select how the picture should be position at the bottom of your screen. Click the OK button and your set.
WOW ! More eye candy. The background now moves in a flowing form - animation. One of the options in the Sidebar I have selected was a monitor for CPU and RAM. After setting DreamScene up, I noticed that CPU was hovering from 10 to 34% while DreamScene was functioning. Which lasted all of about 5 minutes. IMHO - I don’t like it.
I went back to my static background.

My idea of a good desktop is minimalism. I have a black screen and what ever my latest piece of digital artwork is, in the center. So when I heard of an animated desktop for Vista…
But you know, if it was done like some of those screensavers that show a nature scene or fishtank, it could be something worth the extra computing load. And then if sound was added to say, some national park scene with a light breeze in the trees and the sounds of birds, then it would turn your office into a picnic table in a national park. Or use a streaming webcam (with sound) via the internet and you could actually have a real time desktop from the Grand Canyon complete with coyotes and rattlesnakes and the occasional rain storm… It could have some interesting potential if people get creative with it. I can remember seeing people at work staring at a new screensaver of a tree with falling leaves.

I think to run the background a user would be best served with a dual core chip and 2G of RAM.
Then it may be worth it.
Thanks for the comments Tim.

yes, with a dual core 2G ram system it is by far worth it. It looks AWESOME! That’s what i’ve got and while it uses 20-25% CPU, I notice no performance loss because i have another core and more than 1.5G ram still free (It does use 100-200MB of ram)

Hi dude500,
Thanks for the comment. I thought the dual core chips would handle this well. Your comment confirms this. Thanks for taking the time to post.

@mat: you can find the “grass dream” on http://dream.wincustomize.com/ but there are a lot of other free dreamscene sites like http://www.dreamscene.org/ or the ipfreaks site.

Here is a link to some great Dreamscenes all in the MPG format that I uploaded. They include some of the best Dreamscenes, including the ‘premium’ dream, ‘Blissful Sunset’ and the Waterfall Dream that Bill Gates showed off at CES.
Enjoy!
