Vista – Replacement In 2009? Code Named?

I don’t get it. Last week I got a secret email from I can’t say who, from a company I can’t mention, for testing a product I can’t talk about. NDA = Non-Disclosure Agreement. That’s where you sign that you will not, won’t not, shall not and not-not, tell anyone under the penalty of death (I made that part up!), anything that you may know about something, even if you don’t know about it, but have been told about it.

Very simple.

Two things here I just don’t get:

1. Microsoft announces it is extending support for Windows XP until 2014.

2. Now it tells the world that a new Windows will be out at the end of 2009. Which means 2010 at the earliest. And that the new Windows has a new super secret code name. I’m guessing something like Tarantella – warm fuzzy feeling on the outside – but still able to suck the blood out of you. (Not a clue what the new name will be, but it will be leaked soon.)

It’s almost like going to a car lot. The salesperson tells you not to buy the 2007 model, that the 2002 model is better, and in 2009 the model will be completely redone anyway so why waste your money buying something new right now?

What to you think? Comments welcome.

Is this a legit article regarding a “new” Windows version by 2010 0r 2011?

If support for XP will stay around until 2014 I can’t imagine any companies pushing to upgrade anytime soon. The only thing that will force people into Vista and beyond is the longevity of the hardware and whether or not warranty options will no longer be available.

What a joke! What are we getting if we upgrade–more junk no one will ever use before the next upgrade–that’s what…

good luck in your upgrades…I’m staying with XP…

    Hi Mike,
And yes Mike. It is legit.

    Thanks for the comments. Ron

I believe the new name for the OS will be “Vienna” – I think MS are sticking with the ‘naming-OS’s-after-mountains’ theme.

I did watch a webcast about 18months ago about it being called BlackComb but that seems to have gone out the window (no pun intended!).

Expect it change at least two more times anyway…

    Hi Steve,

I’ve seen the Vienna tag also been kicked around. I took a look at your site. I have a friend who sends me pictures like yours except it’s a Coors and a shot sitting next to the steak. LOL

    Thanks for the comment. Ron

I am so over Microsoft. Why are they doing this to us. I just spent $1800 on a new laptop with Vista and now I hear that in 2009, an new OS called Vienna will be introduced. Some of us don’t have $1800 grand to spend when a new OS is introduced. Why is Microsoft supporting XP till 2014, and no mention of when Vista will be supported. I am thinking about returning this laptop, which I am still able to do, and I am going Mac. I am done with this BS from Microsoft…

I agree with the MacOS guy, I swapped for a mac and just use paralls for gaming. Everything just works on my mac

Vista was a flop, so they need to put something else out quick that might have some appeal (or hw/sw deal that MAKES people upgrade). Kinda makes me think about what crap they’ve got up their sleeves. I also wonder how much they spent on market research… if they used a lot, I’d expect someone’s boss to be pretty pissed off these days.

My favorite words from one of their employees- “I wish they’d let us use XP.”

    Hello monkey2000,
Since the original posting, Microsoft does seem to be feeling OUR pain. Even Ballmer admits Vista is a work in progress. Fingers crossed MS will decide to continue allowing XP to be installed on new systems.

One rumor has it that Dell may continue to install XP for a few more years. Just rumor so far.

Windows 7 may arrive in 2009 after all.

    Time will tell.

    Thanks for the comments, Ron

    We decided to call it
    “Vienna Sausage”

Dont you just love a forum where we computer geeks can be as geeky as we wanna?

During the ME era i used Win98SE because it was a better product. And i know many will us XP clean thru the Vista era for the same reasons. To call Vista crap would be a compliment. IT IS THE WORST! Because i am such a comp geek i have it on a split brain format with XP Pro sp3. But i am leaning toward nuking the hard drive and using it for storage.
Question! Isnt the new OS being called Singularity? Or is that just for R n D?

  • Bill Gates

“Tarantella” is the name we are going to stick with for Windows Version 7

Our corporate outlook (which is always been on the back burner). We have a web-based product we are looking in to – this I think we will call…. any ideas?
