Google Gmail - Signup For Free Account - No Inviatation Necessary

Google is now offering Free Gmail accounts to the public that do not require a invitation. And Google also explains why they are assigning Gmail accounts in a most unusual way compared to what others like Yahoo offer.
I always wondered why Gmail was only available by invitation. Google explains this that they are trying to cut down on spam. Also this new sign up procedure requires that you have a cell phone with text messaging available. Google can then send you account information to activate a Free account.
And of course, Free Gmail accounts are still available by invitation.

OR, get a Free invitation from me. I have 22 left. Just drop me a comment and I’ll send you one. All that I need is a name and a valid email to send the invitation to. ![]()

I don’t know, I’ve been with Yahoo for quite a few years now and Gmail doesn’t seem to have anything that Yahoo mail doesn’t. Yahoo has great spam filtering, virus scanning, 1GB of space, and POP access, -all for free. Is there something that puts Gmail ahead of this? I’ve never used it, but I have read their promotional stuff.
Of course, thanks to Gmail, Yahoo upped their space limit from 6MB to 1GB. And I think Yahoo scrapped their plans to start charging and introducing “premium” accounts. Us little folks always win when the giants start fighting…

Okay, so technically GMail is free. Well, you don’t pay for it but you indeed have to pay a cell phone bill, in the first place to even be able to get it, unless someone does assign you. I just want to comment on these two small issues.
One, in reality, you’re paying anywhere from 30 (varies a bit) dollars a month to almost 70 (again, varies a bit) dollars a month for a cell phone bill just to be able to sign up. Of course, when you look at it it’s worth it because once you’re signed up you no longer need to use your cell phone for gmail again. Well, unless you use gmail through your cell phone itself. However, you could also use a friend’s cell number to get a free account, but then (and I haven’t tried this as I have my own cell phone but got invited by a friend of mine) would you still be able to create an account of your own with the same cell number? I’m thinking not, but I don’t know.
Two, the invites are interesting. I just wonder exactly how they work. I mean you get to invite so many people at a time but how does the number of invites you actually have work? Why so many or so few and why do the numbers go up? If anyone knows the answer to this please e-mail me. Thanks!

Hi Tim,
Good point. I don’t think either Yahoo nor Gmail offer anything vastly different from each other.
Eric,
Thanks for your comments as well. And I don’t know how the invites are determined either. And I also noted the cell phone charges as well.
Thanks to you both, Ron

Ron…are there any free invites left? I could use one as I hate Yahoo, and my school e-mail has absolutely atrocious spam control!

Hi Tami,
Since I wrote this article Google has changed their policy. You no longer need a invite. Just go to gmail.com and you can get a new account for free. Hope this helps.
