Bad Vista - They Even Have A Web Site

  • No Related Post

Anti-Microsoft site BadVista.Org states in their preamble:

“The BadVista campaign is an advocate for the freedom of computer users, opposing adoption of Microsoft Windows Vista and promoting free (as in freedom) software alternatives.”

advocate for the freedom of computer users” I didn’t even know I was being held captive.

“opposing adoption of Microsoft Windows Vista” This means that if you are using XP, Me, 2000 or 98, you’re OK.

“promoting free (as in freedom) software alternatives” Heh, I’m for Free software! Here is a great site for Free software.

Check out 100-Downloads.Com They even have Free stuff for Vista.

Under their “How You Can Help Section” is this:

Promote the campaign by speaking out when you agree”. Does this mean if you don’t agree your are supposed to remain silent?

But there is also a offer of providing assistance in locating Free software. Which is a nice helpful service for those interested in finding open source software.
Plus there is plenty of Microsoft bashing which I am sure will bring joy to the Microsoft haters in the crowd.

My take - BadVista.org may be a better service if they lean more towards showing how good open source software is in comparison to Vista or other softwares. If they lean more towards being just another bashing portal against Microsoft, they may loose some of their audience. Just a thought.

What’s funny about all this anti-Microsoft rhetoric is that there’s probably more free software available for Windows users than there is for the other OS’s. While MS is a commercial enterprise and just as profit motivated as General Motors, over the years an enormous number of independent developers have made the Windows platform valuable by producing freeware for it. So there’s Microsoft, who literally own Windows, and then there’s the “Windows Community” who use and develop software for Windows. In my mind, it’s the huge library of sofware titles that 3rd parties have produced that makes Windows worth the cost of buying it. Windows isn’t really so much about Microsoft anymore, as it is about a computing culture that’s grown from it. I posted a comment to newspaper review of Vista that was talking about all the “new” and “unique” things that Vista had. I said that there was probably a 3rd party program already available that could substitute for each of these new functions in Vista. I was just guessing, actually, but I’m sure it’s mostly true…

Hi Tim,

Great points. And I believe you are correct about software being available that could substitute for the new features of Vista.

Thanks once again for your valuable comments.

There’s plenty enough free software for Linux as well. Nearly all the software there is free.

And what makes Windows valuable is that nearly all the commercial software produced is intended for it. So we should buy Windows because third parties produce software for Windows, which they produce because 90% of the users have Windows, and 90% of the users have Windows because third parties produce software mostly for Windows, …

What makes Windows valuable is the inertia of the people AND developers who’re used to it.

Do you think that companies would keep producing Windows-oriented software if no one used Windows?

Hi Sasho,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. It is appreciated. And no, I doubt Windows would be as popular if no one used it.

Regards, Ron
