Google - Virtual World Coming Soon - Rumor

  • No Related Post

Second Life move over. There might be a new kid on your block coming to every PC on the entire planet. Rumor’s once again are afloat that Google is planning their own virtual world game and are finishing up some of the final touches. Launch date could be as soon as mid-year as the search engine giant continues to spread it’s tentacles into new areas.

For those who haven’t joined in the fun of Second Life, here is a brief explanation of what it is. You register to join a Internet based community, a virtual world, and are able to take on a persona [avatar] of a virtual world inhabitant so that you can socialize with others. While it is simple to called a ‘game’ there is no scoring, point count, nor winners and losers per se. Though the exact number of registered users is estimated around 3 million, not all registered users participate daily.

I think that just about covers it. I haven’t personally joined Second Life, so maybe someone else who has, can leave a comment for all of us to share.

Rumor switched turned off for now. :-)

It’s all about an escape from your life. you can do whatever you do in the real life, but there are no cars, you can fly! You choose your body(skin eyes hair… even your genit..) You can be naked or dressed as you like, all that for free. you go play in casinos or to the beach or wherever you like to. If you enter your credit card information the 1rst time you log in, they will pay you $250 (Linden dollars) and you can make business to change your linden dollars with US$ later. Each person has its name on top of him, you hear and you speak with other people that are around, all by typing… When you are bored and you dont know where to go, you can ask to go to popular places… Nice try, needs a lot of work. Should be tested.

[...] [RUMOR] Google - Virtual World Coming Soon (tags: virtualworld virtual avatar chat 3dchat secondlife) [...]

If the rumor is true, this is no small news.

When I first saw Second Life, I realized right away that this technology is destined to become web 3.0.

The best way to describe it to someone who’s not familiar is this:

Current web: Flat pages with text, photos and video in rows and columns.

Future web: Actual 3-dimensional stores, classrooms, showrooms, etc. where people can gather and interact.

Here’s an example. Today you go onto Amazon.com and search for books. They are arranged in rows and columns of information and you’re basically there by yourself even thought there are millions of other people on the same site. Now Imagine being a 3-D character that can walk into a virtual store with shelves and tables and lounge space and whatnot just like Barnes and Nobel where you can look at many titles or products and see other people with the same interest also shopping with whom you can interact and discuss your interests.

This idea is being embraced by IBM, the company responsible for the the first e-commerce boom so you can bet this is the second coming. They are ahead of the curve with this new technology and are working with big retailers such as Sears to construct virtual stores in Second Life where customers can view items such as furniture in 3-D, walk around it, sit on it, create a room the size of their room, set up the furniture, see how it all fits, feels and works together in that room, etc.

The implications for education are astronomical. With this technology people from all over the world can gather in a classroom or lecture hall and interact with each other and the instructor. I’ve done so myself.

I’m also sure this is going to be part of the solution to cutting greenhouse gases as fewer and few people need to leave home to attend school, meetings, showrooms, etc.

I’ve written articles for a news paper in Second Life called the Metaverse Messenger  http://metaversemessenger.com) about IBM and Cisco and others who are embracing Second Life and this is no small venture for them. IBM has invested over $10 million of its own money before Sears, and others came along (with similar budgets, I’m sure).

I’ve always believed in being an early adopter of new internet technology in my job as an internet consultant, and I highly suggest you start learning about this especially if your demographic is young and tech-savvy.

In fact if anyone is interested, I’ve written an article called “Five Sites You Didn’t Know Were Search Engines” which is on my website which includes Second Life along with iTunes, YouTube, and others.

The 3-D metaverse is the next really big wave on the internet and Google knows this. In addition to a regular website as we know it which requires web hosting and development, every company will in the near future also have a piece of virtual land in virtual reality with a virtual building, theater, showroom, etc. where they will also do business. There will be Google Maps for the real world and a second realm of search-engine-enabled Maps for the virtual world.

Here’s some more news on Google for anyone that really wants to learn more: http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=IBM+second+life&btnG=Search+News

Hello Rick,

Thanks for the insight you have provided on this topic. Your comments are very much appreciated.

Gracias

[...] 26, 2007 Google virtual world? ::virtual yawn:: Posted by Melanie Seasons under blogs   I was under the impression that Second Life was“over.”  It made a big splash last year, but as far as I know, things have all but fizzled out.  The only real Second Life news on the radar was in April when it was questioned whether online affairs constituted infidelity in real life.  (That, and the fact that one of the most purchased items in Second Life is genitalia. Ew.)  So why is it that everyone is getting all goose-pimply about all the rumors that Google is going to launch its own Second Life-esque virtual world? [...]
