Symantec Store - Alert - My Free Trial Has Expired - NOT!

Advertisement or alert? I’m not sure what this was. But it arrived at my in-box yesterday afternoon.

“From :Symantec Store [ Symantec at reply.digitalriver.com]

OUTBREAK UPDATE:
Spam Surge: Trojan.Peacomm Threat Level is HIGH

Trojan.Peacomm is one of a number of spamming Trojan horse programs Symantec has seen lately that appear to originate from Russia and are clearly aimed at making money for the author by pumping up penny stocks. The victim is enticed through social engineering techniques to open an attachment, which typically appears to be a video clip on a recent, newsworthy event.”

There was more yak-yak but you get the drift. While I appreciate the alert, even though I had not signed up to receive a notification. But this is the part that threw me:

“Your free Norton trial has expired. You are not protected from Trojan.Peacomm. Get protected now with Norton Internet Security 2007

Free Trial ? I haven’t used ANY Norton aka Symantec products on my computers for well over 3 years. And I am protected by AVG just fine thank you. :-)

I had read that Symantec software sales were down, but to revert to deceptive advertising is even a new low for them. What’s next? Malware? :-)

AVG? it does nothing… it can annoy me about a virus, but it cannot get rid of it, nor put in in quarinteene.. i “dont have permission”… but i am one of the computer admins! i think its worthless

Hi Jesse,
Sorry to hear about your displeasure with AVG. I’ve installed AVG personally or had AVG installed per my recommendation on at least 200+ machines without incident.

Thanks fo your comments. Ron

Hello Ingeborg,
I would give Symantec support a call and see if you can get the problem rectified.

PS If you used a credit card to make your payment I would call your card company and consider stopping the charge until the problem is solved.

I was on the annual renewal plan, however, I changed my credit card and of course number. I tried to let Symantec know of my change but I could not get to them. I wish to change to Norton 360. I filled out an order form on 14 August, however, I put dashes between the numbers, which apparently is a NO-NO.

Hello jimmie howard,
I removed the personal information you provided.
Ron

If you reformated with older norton products it would give you a nother full year, but with Norton 360 since it is connected to an account of the internet that doesn’t work anymore. Also this doesn’t look like this email came from symantec since the domain is reply.digitalriver.com so don’t just blame Symantec it could be a phising email, but the bottom of it looks real. I still don’t think they would go through a third party.
