Microsoft has decided to extend support for both Home and Media Center editions to match that of Windows XP Professional edition. Microsoft announcement here.
From what I can glean from other sources and information I have received, it seems that Microsoft feels that many households are using more than just one computer systems. That the old systems running Windows XP Home and Media Center editions, still have a few more years of life in them. And consumer feedback has attested to this fact as well as from other sources that Microsoft has received information from.
Color me surprised. Especially since the announcement comes right before the launch of Windows Vista.
Could this be the start of a kinder, gentler corporate presence?
Comments welcome.

Didn’t Microsoft do this for Windows 98 when Windows ME tanked?

Hi Chris,
If memory serves me correctly, I believe they extended support for 98 more than once, because of public sentiment. Maybe someone can confirm this.

I’m sure there’s an evil reason. Maybe people are getting the impression that Vista is just an excuse for MS to “churn” their customers. Service packs are free, but if they come in the form of a new OS, then they generate revenue and not just an expense. Coming at the public launch of Vista, it sounds rather strange from a sales and marketing perspective. Maybe it’s just a big mistake on MS’s part.

I must admit, it is strange. I didn’t even believe the info. when I first read it, and went directly to the MS site to confirm it.
Maybe it’s a typo ! LOL

Maybe MS is getting the hint that the user base they have established in XP that are using borderline and below Vista spec systems just can’t afford to get there systems up to snuff. Taking into account all the budget systems that have been bought in recent years. Think about this. You just went to Best Buy and bought there under $500 Emachine. It has a 3.2 Celeron D. 512MB of shared RAM. Sure, it can run Vista, but I’d rather slam my hand in a car door. Repeatedly! Just my opinion. There are still alot of PCs out there the people will find that XP runs great. Lots of driver support. Will run most if not all your basic needs. Run Vista on these same machines and that may turn into a very painful eXPerience.
