Internet Explorer 7 - Not As Advertised?

Funny. At first I thought it was just a fluke, maybe just people I knew, maybe people in the forums who were more computer literate who wanted to return to their old browser until I read this article from InformationWeek.

Seems this is more than I first thought. I had received several emails from folks that I know asking me what I thought about Internet Explorer 7 when it first launched. Not being a I.E. user and having opted long ago for Firefox, I could only rely on what I had read and hear on the Internet. So I said I thought it would be a good move. More secure and hopefully lesss vulnerable then version 6.

I never gave it much though. One response I received from a friend stated he was glad he made the upgrade and it worked well. I even installed it on my systems as well. Again, not another thought. Then a week after saying OK to version 7, I received a email from another friend saying they were having trouble getting onto a banking site. Uninstall back to version 6 and all was well. Hmm…… one machine is not much to make a case on.

Then 5 more emails! How do I get this thing off my computer? Oops. We seem to have a problem Houston. Again, after removal, all was well. I also noted in the 3 forums I frequent similar posts about installing version 7.

Again, being a Firefox user had to refrain from the “install Firefox” lament that so many people seem to shout. I personally believe that each of us have a right to chose the browser we want to use. And no one has a right to force us into something we don’t feel comfortable with.

But take a look at the article above. I was surprised by the results that Firefox has continued to grow and that some folks are not happy with version 7. This just kind of supports what I have begun to sense. Some folks are having some issues with version 7 and have either gone back to version 6, or have switched to Firefox or other browsers like Opera. :-)

Comments welcome as always.

When I first switched to Firefox over a year ago and discovered that I could do everything including my online banking using an “alternative” browser, I began to think that the browser wars had entered a new era. If IE7 is less convenient to use than Firefox (and I don’t know because you can’t install IE7 on W98) then I think it shows that MS isn’t trying to win the browser war anymore. They could blow the alternative browsers out of the water (so to speak) if they wanted to. I mean IE7 is automatically installed on almost every Windows machine. What reasonably good piece of software could not fail to dominate it’s market with that sort of help?

What Do You Think?
