How Confident Are You That Your Security Software Will Work?

  • No Related Post

Sometimes I wonder if we don’t spend too much time warning each other about outbreaks of ‘bugs’ and trying to keep our systems updated. Maybe we should examine if our security software is really doing its job and if we should be using a different product.

Well Trend Micro announced the results of its September, 2006 survey of 1500 users from the US, Japan, United Kingdom, France and Germany who were asked how confident they were in their security software. Surprisingly 51% of respondents stated that they were not confident in their protection.

Or maybe it’s not surprising when we examine some of the issues that have occurred in the past few years. We read about how large corporations are hacked and information is stolen. Or when a group broke into our financial institutions and were rooting around the data centers a month before the break in was discovered. Or the constant news about someone losing a laptop which has every piece of identifying information about thousands or millions of people that was protected with a simple password.

So how much confidence are we supposed to have in the consumer software when the big guys can’t even protect their stuff?

Comments welcome.

I think it’s like home security or other real world stuff; we have to see it in action before we have any confidence in it. I have a lot of confidence in seat belts since I was in a highway accident 20 years ago. I didn’t even get a scratch although the car was a write-off. I don’t think most home users really know what anti-virus or firewalls are doing or are supposed to do or if they’re doing anything at all. Personally, I’m confused about online security. I got rid of my antivirus years ago and just sort my email by hand. Never had a problem.
