Normally, setting the default browser is a snap. You just set which browser you wish to be in charge, and the browser will make the necessary registry entries. But every once in a while, no matter what you do, the settings won’t take and your system will revert back to its old settings. I just saw a recent posting in one of the forums in which the person was trying to set Firefox as their default browser, but Internet Explorer wouldn’t let go.
In situations like this, we sometimes need to use a third party tool to make manual adjustments to the system. In this case I had recommended a tool called SetBrowser. This small utility will make the necessary registry adjustments, guaranteeing the browser you want will be set as the default browser.
The author also mentions “‘Forcing’ the default browser, as SetBrowser does, is really a last resort.” I agree.
You can get SetBrowser 1.4 for free from here. As with any third party software, use with caution. I would set a restore point before proceeding.
