Dell XPS Computers - Get Duplicate CDs

Owners of Dell XPS computer systems are now able to request duplicate copies of Windows XP as well as new resource CDs that contain the latest drivers and utilities. Dell cautions that the resource CD may not contain all of the latest drivers for your particular model, but there is a link on the page to download the latest drivers. There is no mention whether there is a fee for this service. But I did note that nothing on the site mentions the word “free.”

Own another Dell system besides XPS? Need a Windows CD for XP?

Most OEMs do not include the original Windows CD with their systems. Instead they provide what is called a ‘recovery partition’ which is basically part of the hard drive that is set aside that contains a image of Windows and the drivers for your computer, as well as the original software that came with the system. OR, I have also seen on HP computers, the ability to make copies of the CDs to disk. But sometimes users fail to do this.

Your best protection is case of hard disk failure is having the original Windows CD available.

I have recommended in the past, and still recommend today, that if you did not receive the original Windows CD to call your computer manufacturer. Be firm, and request the CD be sent to you. There may be a modest shipping charge for this service.

And your mileage may vary depending on the manufacturer and also how old your system is.

I had a computer from Dell XPS and it keep crashing when playing a game
Dell tech can’t take care of this problem ,,if is anything beside, upgrading drivers or video card(radom x 1300)suppose one of the best,my windows is XP,have plenty of memory 4G
hope you can help me
thanks
Paul Mesia.

Hi Paul,
Try this. I’m not sure how many sticks of RAM you have, but pull out ALL but one stick. Play the game. Try all sticks of RAM on their own, by themselves, and play the game for each stick. If the game crashes using each stick, at least that eliminates bad memory. If it crashes only on one stick, that is your culprit. Replace it.

Some will recommend Memtest or other memory testers to try. Unfortunately in my experience these programs will report all is well, even when a bad stick is present. It is a PITA to do it this way, but effective.

Another thought. If you added more RAM to the system, and or any other device, and you are using the standard PS that came with the Dell, you may be running out of power. A weak PS will also cause crashes when the system is running full throttle during game play.

And yes, new drivers are always a must on any system. As long as they behave themselves. :-)

Good luck. I hope you find the cause.

Regards, Ron
