Your Computer And Your Garage - Why They Are Similar - Part 2

  • No Related Post

In Part 1 I covered the problem: saving everything on your computer system. In Part 2 I will cover what you can do to correct the problem and have a faster running system.

Save Your Stuff To CD Or DVD
Almost all of the newer computer systems are now coming with either a CD or DVD recorder, aka ‘burner,’ and the prices of these are very inexpensive. So adding this new hardware to an existing computer is a good idea. Then you can transfer and back up your stuff to CD or DVD disks and remove the files from your computer system.

Back Up Your Stuff To An Online Backup Service
There are many online backup services that offer free storage space on their computer systems. This is a posting I recently did suggesting a freebie online service located here. Upload your files and get them off of your system.

Delete The Files You Are No Longer Using
The less you have on your system, the better it will run. So getting rid of any files that you are not using will increase system performance.

Network Server
With the cost of computers being relatively inexpensive, you can also setup a home network and transfer your unused files to a network server computer for storage and retrieval at a later time.

No matter which option you select, it is also a good idea to defrag your hard disk by running the disk defragmenter tool on your system. This can be found under Accessories - System Tools folder.

When defragmenting a system, the built-in defrag program is really pretty inefficient. We use JKDefrag  http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/) where I work: it’s an open-source defrag program that runs significantly faster and more efficiently than the default Windows defragger.

Hi Adam,
Thanks for the info.
