USB External Hard Drive Backup System From Seagate

Posted by on Dec 13, 2006 | 10 Comments

I have been looking for an external USB backup for my main computer system. I have been using Seagate hard disks for the past couple of years since Seagate started to offer a five-year warranty on its drives. I also investigated other USB external drives from other manufacturers, but in the end chose a Seagate system. I purchased a 200GB drive from Tiger Direct for $145, which included all necessary cables and software.

The installation process was a no-brainer and went smoothly on my Windows XP Pro w/ SP2 system. XP immediately recognized the external hard disk and the included software installed without incident. Seagate uses a software titled Bounce Back Express which is user friendly and effortless to use. It was intuitive with a limited learning curve. I was able to make my first backup immediately after installation.

The system itself provides:

  • Backup with the touch of a button.
  • On/off button eliminates concerns that your hard drive hasn’t been shut down safely.
  • Built-in self-monitoring technology continuously checks your hard drive for data safety and drive performance.
  • Advanced software lets you quickly retrieve files.

Seagate also offers external drives with FireWire support. Drive capacity ranges from 200GB up to a whopping 750 GB in size.

This is a great way to back up your video, music, and picture files in case of a system crash.

How do you do a backup with seagate. I tried creating a new folder in my computer by right clicking, however “new” didn’t come up. I’ve also tried copying and pasting from “c” drive to my seagate external harddrive “e”. Is there an easy way? Thanks for your help…

Did you receive a disk with the drive that contains backup software? If so, use the software to do a backup. If you didn’t get a disk, ‘hello Seagate’.

I have a Segate External 500 GB. I want to perform a systems back up to both my desktop and laptop. I use Windows to back up thus forcing me to use a floppy recovery 3.5 disk. This is fine for my desktop but my laptop does not have a floppy. How can I get around this floppy problem and just go to a straight systems back for both computers and avoid the floppy issue?

    Hi Bill,
On your laptop, does it have a burner? Or does your desktop have a burner? If either one does, you can make a recovery disk onto a CD or DVD.

Of course both must have the same OS as well.

    Hope this helps.

    Ron:

Yes, both have burners and both have the same OS which is XP Pro. But how do I get from the prompt to make a floppy when it comes up to my respective burners? Something new to this old man trying to keep up with the ever changing technology. bill

    Bill,
I am not sure if this will work, but try burning the floppy to a CD and see if it will boot. Unfortunately XP I believe doesn’t support burning to CD, just floppy.

Let me know if this works. If not we will try something else.

    Ron;

But when I do the backup on my Laptop XP forces me to create a floppy. And at that point I have to X out then I get a message that my backup may not be complete or may not have been fully successful. Even if I am successful in doing the burn from the floppy to the CD the fact still remains my laptop back up is incomplete unless I create a floppy then and there.

      Hi Bill,
Hang on. Let me do some more checking. It may be awhile. My wife is in the hospital.

It’s clear to me that the organizers have let SXSW get way out of hand. The crowds that come there often just come to be seen and don’t have any real interest in learning or experiencing anything. They just come to act like idiots and show off in front of their douche-bag friends. I would’ve attended 3 years ago. Now I’ll never go.
