How To Uninstall Internet Explorer Version 7
- 41
- Add a Comment
Over the weekend I received an email from a friend of mine asking if it was possible to uninstall Internet Explorer 7 and return to Internet Explorer 6. Seems he didn’t like IE 7 and felt more comfortable using the older browser which he had become more comfortable using for the past few years.
This made me think. I wonder if others using version 7 would want to know how to return to version 6. Thus I’m writing this article.
Uninstall Internet Explorer 7
- Click on the START button and go to Control Panel.
- Click on the ADD/REMOVE programs icon.
- Scroll down the list of installed programs until you see Windows Internet Explorer 7 in the list and then click on it . Select CHANGE/REMOVE. Follow the onscreen instructions.
That’s it. Restart your system and you’ll be back to version 6.
Please Note: This is for Windows XP Only. It will not work with Vista !

Hi!
Many thanks for your instructions about uninstalling IE7. Like your friend I was having difficulty navigating this latest offering from microsoft. I was also despairing because whenever I clicked to view a new window the original one promptly closed down! Now that I have uninstalled IE7 I am back to IE6 and very happy as everything appears to working fine now. So many thanks for your blog.
kind regards.

Can’t find it on my programs. Started to uninstall and was told I was on the wrong acc’t. Went to my other acc’t and now it says the file has already been unzipped, but I can’t override or ignore it and if I cancel it it stops and I can’t click “no”

Hi Virginia,
Sounds like you were trying the uninstall from a account without administrative privileges. May I recommend that you post your question here please.

Hi Dave,
Take a look at my site - I just posted a second method to uninstall IE7. See if that works for you.

thank you very much for your instruction. I read a similar instruction on Microsoft website but it tells me to download the version i want after uninstalling. Your instructions are so much clearer!
I don’t really have difficulty using IE7 but many websites that I use (especially Korean ones) doesn’t work with IE7. IE6 is much easier to use compared to IE7.
Thanks again!

Gosh, I absolutely hate IE7. What a disaster–features are taken away and everything that it tries to do “new” is better done with Opera et al. I couldn’t find the “uninstall” feature fast enough. Thanks for pointing out that uninstall is under WINDOWS Internet Explorer 7. (Not the more logical “Internet Explorer 7″ or “Microsoft I…”

Well, who would have guessed that removing IE7 via the software option would leave IE6 in its place! And if one uninstals this, does IE5.5. replace it? How far back can one go?
I dont even recollect Microsoft offering a download of IE6 currently. But perhaps I am mistaken.
Does anyone else have this weird policy? Would deleting NAV’s current version leave me with the previous one?

Thanks for the comment. Good point. It’s almost like MS knew people wouldn’t like IE7 - strange.

HELP!!!
After I started to install IE7, it said I had to restart my computer. WEll after i did, when I got on my internet again, almost everything i tried to do came up with, “The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context’.
So I tried to go to Add/Remove to delete it. I checked Include Updates, or whatever it said. But I couldn’t find it!!! It’s not there!!!
HELP!!!!!

Hello Nichol,
Try reinstall IE7 again, but this time during the install, disable any anti-virus program you are using on your system. If you are using a suite of products, disable all during install.
See what happens.
If you still are having the same problem, I’d post the problem at one of the forums like lockergnome.

Another thought? Is your system virus and spyware free?
Hope this helps, Ron
Thanks so much

Many thanks. I was also wondering how to return to IE 6. I have experienced many pages that lock up when trying to use the BACK button on IE 7, so back to 6 I go. Sometimes the latest and greatest just is not.

I would like to know how to use IE 6 and IE 7 both on the computer. I have some programs that will not cooperate with IE7 yet, however the tab feature for browsing is sooo much better.
Please advise if this is possible.
Thanks,

Hello Scott,
I checked over at Microsoft and found this blog entry. And as a side note, MS has released Virtual PC 2007 for free.
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/11/30/ie6-and-ie7-running-on-a-single-machine.aspx
Another option if you like tabbed browser is to try a alternate browser such as Firefox or Opera, if they meet your needs.
Hope this helps. Ron

Internet Explorer 7, my rating out of 10 would be a 1, as zero being the lowest. I didn’t find the tabbing option very user friendly. The Enlarge feature in the bottom right corner is overall good. I run my screen in a very high resolution 1280 by 960,and in most cases need to have it set to 200% in order to read most text. But surfing from one web page to another and also using the back button, it has a 90% chance to revert back to 100%, also there is no Settings to make IE7 stay at 200% as a default. As in IE6 you can view Icons in Large format, but in IE7 there is no option. Well back to IE6 is my only option at this time, Thank you all for you input.

Hello Sheryl,
Did you look under Programs to see if IE was still listed?
If not, go to Control Panel, click on Windows Components,
and make sure IE is checked. If not check it and it should repair itself.
Still no IE, get a new copy of 6 here:

Best wishes and hope this works.

I honestly don’t know why anyone would want to use IE when Firefox is available. I switched over to Firefox years ago when my browser got hijacked and my computer was hacked by visiting a web site, all because of IE. I have tried IE7 and didn’t like it. Oh and most Hackers love IE by the way.

Penelope,
Thanks for your comments. That is what happened to me as well, browser was hijacked and I switched to Firefox and have never looked back.
I even tried IE 7 which I didn’t like at all. Ended up returning back to 6.

Hi
i have been having trouble entering trusted websites since I foolishly installed IE7in Jan. Have spent the morning trying to uninstall. I can get to the part of the uninstall wizard where it tells me that IE 7 is involved with many of my programs and uninstalling it may cause trouble. short of wiping the hard drive and doing a clean install of everything do you have any suggestions.By the way I think I hate microsoft. Life was easier when I used fire fox. I want to go back to them.
thanks

Hi Sandra,
Several options. Leave IE 7 on and use Firefox.
OR go ahead and do the uninstall ignoring the warning.
OR go over to the LG forum here and have one of the experts provide you with more help:

I am having a problem with Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP. I am using a HP vs15 computer. I installed the Internet Explorer 7.0 around 3 days ago and i have had an error that reads “the requested lookup key was not found in any activation code context”. I have tried numerous times to uninstall Internet Explorer but it would not let me uninstall. It says “Unable to uninstall windows Internet Explorer” IE6 worked fine, and now i feel terrible because i updated my friends computer IE7 and she cannot acess any website unless she types into the msn searchbar.
PLEASE HELP!
thanks.

Hi,
I’m trying to use IE6 after having installed IE7. Once I delete IE7, is it automatically back to IE6? Because I tried to reinstall IE6, and a popup keeps coming up saying that it has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on the system and the setup cannot continue.
Please help!
Thanks

Greetings,
I am wondering if I can use firefox 2.0 without uninstalling IE7? I want to see if I like firefox before removing IE7. Will there be a problem or conflicts if they are both on my system? Is there a way to just disable IE7?
Thank you, in advance, for your help and time in reading this.

I need to uninstall IE7 from XP2.
I tried both of your methods and neither work. I don’t get a wizard.
It will not install IE6 as it says a later version is installed. What I now have installed is IE0 with few command, none on back page.
