A few days ago I thought it would be a good idea to share ways to speed Windows XP up, in a simple manner. Alot of people ask this, and most time, it doesn’t have anything to do with spy-ware or ad-aware, as most people blame. There are a few simple ways I’ve provided below, that will speed up your computer, quite a bit. Some of these steps may also work in Windows 98, Windows 2K, and Vista. So here I go:

Disable file indexing: The indexing service extracts information from documents and other files on the hard drive and creates a keyword, for fasting searching. As you can imagine, this process can be quite a hog on any PC. To disable File Indexing, simply: Double-click My Computer icon (Should be on the desktop). Next, right-click on the C: Drive (Or your main drive Windows is installed on), then select Properties. Uncheck “Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching.” Next, apply changes to “C: sub-folders and files,” and click OK. If a warning message appears such as “Access is denied”, click the Ignore All button, and your good to go.

Updating: Alot of people don’t believe this, but its true. Updating your drivers and using Windows Update can increase your computers stability and performance quite a bit. To do this, simply use windows update (update.Microsoft.com) and choose express, to get all the recommended updates.

MSConfig: MSConfig stands for Microsoft Configuration. It also controls what starts up when you turn your computer on. Of course, at least you shouldn’t want every single thing to load when Windows does. To disable unwanted start-up programs: Click Start, Run, type ”MSConfig” without the ”. Click the start-up tab. Expand the command tab. This shows you the location to better determine what is it. Click Disable all, and then check your Antivirus and other wanted programs.

Disk De-fragment: Hard-drives tend to get old. Files seem to get lost and put out of place, which can cause windows to slow down. De-fragmenting is an easy way to speedup Windows XP by putting all those files where they belong and deleting unnecessary files too. To do it, simply use the built in feature in Windows. The Windows Defragmenter software works just fine, you don’t need other programs to do it! Simply click Start, then All Programs (to expand your programs), then Go up to Accessories, System Tools. Click on ”Disk Defragmenter”. Now once the program is up click on De-fragment, or Analyze if you want to see if Windows recommends you to De-fragment. It will take a while, but it’s well worth it!

Antivirus: Norton Antivirus, McAfee and such antivirus programs can actually SLOW down your PC rather than help it. Personally, I recommend NOD32, or AVG Free Edition. Both great Antivirus programs. Avg Free Edition (Obviously Free as in Title), can be found at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff. It has a very easy-to-use interface. It also comes with a firewall if you purchase the more advanced pack. Nod32 on the other hand, is also great. It is not however free, but inexpensive. If your wondering about just try the trial out, it will give you a feel of what it’s like!

Well folks, i hope this helps you as it helped me. If you have any questions about what i have shared today, feel free to contact me by eMail at Robertmacg@gmail.com.

Get a Free Audio Book

Are you tired of reading books? Me too. Over the years, I developed pulpuslaceratapohobia - and the only known cure for that is Audible. Finally, a way to digest words without actually having to read them. Professional voices are wonderful choices if you love literary works in audio format. Are you ready to read some audio books? Maybe you should just listen to them instead.

VMware and Parallels for Virtual Machines

It doesn't matter if you're running on Windows or Mac OS X - every power user needs either Parallels or VMware (or both). There's never been an easier way to test software without destroying your primary operating system's stability. Think of how many times you wish you could press a 'reverse' button on your computer. Plus, there's no easier way to try new Linux distributions - see what all the fuss is about. Run Windows in OS X, run Linux in Windows, but the best way to do either is with VMware and/or Parallels.
