Creative Commons was launched in 2001. The initial set of Creative Commons licenses were issued in 2002. Whether you like the idea, dislike it, or somewhere in between, in an age where our patent laws have changed little since they were created for mining claims, anyone who does anything to evolve this area of human existence deserves support. At Gnomedex 2007 I fed this into the chat on the big screen: "use peer to peer shared knowledge to form organic quantum computer, attach a creative commons vetting and credit process which includes, a nod to patents" as a starting point towards creating some sort of a dialogue for a digital trail meets rights string of ownership to promote turning a team based project theorem into a revenue stream. This way all the contributors would be credited for their involvement and paid in the event the final product or service became financially viable. Yea… not so much as a fart as a response. So, again, I put forth the idea that anyone, anywhere, that has an idea on how we can improve the creative commons model and or use some strategy to share impromptu ideas and get paid for it, please credit me and fill a paper bag full of greasy twenties. See my thoughts from six years ago below. - Rod

A Foreword to Kohel Haver’s COPYRIGHT and MOTION PICTURE PRODUCTION
by Rod Pitman

"Everything belongs to the inspired and dedicated thief… They supplicate him from the bored minds of school children, from the prisons of uncritical veneration, from dead museums and dusty archives… He must assure himself of the quality of the merchandise and its suitability for his purpose before he conveys the supreme honor and benediction of his theft… We are not responsible. Steal anything in sight."

-William S. Burroughs, ‘Les Voleurs’

Always keep a passport and a phalanx of attorneys in your pocket, you’ll be fine. Kohel Haver and I first met as volunteers on the board of a non-profit organization, fronting for an insane asylum, that was a cover for a black ops project known as the "Frequency Fence." This bio-neurological, electromagnetic induced form of mind control blocks the higher sensory abilities. With the discovery that electrical power generating stations and household appliances were being utilized to "broadcast" electromagnetic distortion and create a perceptual mental chain-gang, I felt all our good work was looking rather grim.

A good attorney is both vile and pernicious, but the downside is they are all infected with Bagnarians disease. A world class proctologist at Oregon Health Sciences University described the symptoms as "virtually undetectable" until the infected become totally consumed by their own asshole. It makes a simple outbreak of meningitis pale in comparison. Regardless, Kohel and I have gotten along like two innocent men in a maximum security cell. My hysteria and hallucinations increased as it became more apparent that things were turning really wrong with the recurring theme being ‘botched civilization.’ Kohel kept reminding me that he was not a criminal attorney [I think he meant his activities were limited to petty crimes and misdemeanors] and ended most of his sentences with "I don’t want to know." Unfortunately, this was less than reassuring with sweet dreams not to be.

Kohel initially struck me as a chubby, bon vivant prince. A cross between a man dressed as a woman trying to get on the life boat, and Elmer Fudd in Khakis bearing automatic weapons. Don’t get me wrong, maybe not the last of the buffalo, but a sexy beast none the less. With the detachment of a chrysalis he was quite the conversationalist, leaping off the starting block by quoting one or several of Boetcker’s "Seven National Crimes":

I don’t think.

I don’t know.

I don’t care.

I am too busy.

I leave well enough alone.

I have no time to read.

I am not interested.

This was usually accompanied by a reptilian licking of the lips in concert with his eyes darting suspiciously back and forth as if searching for some ill-imagined furtive move. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and venture to say these "mannerisms" were more simian in nature, possibly a holdover from the bend in his genetic road map.

When Kohel asked me to make a contribution towards his venture into this written nether world, my bibliophobia aside, the paranoia ran deep. I initially thought he was banking on the notoriety of my capital crimes and RICO violations to spark enough search engine cross references and subsequent book sales to propel his disenfranchised children through ivy league. The more I contemplated this, the less reasonable it seemed. What became self evident was the pressing question of; In this mental prison of the malicious, snooping, interfering, and self righteous, who can you trust more than a cell mate? He may be confused about a number of things, but one thing is for sure, after our mutual dealings with a group of rubes who were totally lacking in humor, charity, and common human decency, he would never enlist me to push dogma, as we both know all too well, that is where all intellectual activity ceases.

Whatever Kohel’s motivation might be in having me cough up this hairball, any good that may come of it is a double edged sword. Imagine the fear that must coarse through the veins at night as he ponders what I may have "nicked" in this little prequel that could come back to haunt him. Forget the fact that my participation immediately brands him as a leper with his colleagues. I’ve been scapegoated and demonized by a lot worse, but now that the attorneys are running Hollywood, his including my preamble in this book may put the whole legal profession at risk. My expose on their cabalistic language, Masonic handshakes, corrupt judges, insider deals, etc., puts the whole idea of a bar ethics committee [what an oxymoron] in question.

Maybe Kohel figures; "What difference does it make anyway." Worse case he might be opening himself up to more professional jealousy. It’s like the Gideons filing a copyright suit against King James. Maybe I need to give him more credit. After all, one has to be pretty fluid to move freely between the uptown "professionals" and the downtown villainy. As you can see I used the term professionals loosely. It’s always been my experience that whenever the subject of "lack of professionalism" is brought up [which is bound to happen when the assassins see my name] that usually indicates someone trying to "snow the snowman" by getting you to "assume the position," hoping that’s where everyone’s eyes are as the accuser perpetrates his criminal act under the guise of "professionalism" or good sensibility and "proper" codes of conduct acceptable within the community.

Call me crazy, but I bet there’s an attorney right now filing suit against this textual tantrum. John and Jane Doe vs. Kohel Haver, et. al., [I'm assuming I'll be covered under his malpractice policy] "Judge, this writing is both the perpetrator and the victim’s cerebral DNA sample exposed." If they take it before a hanging judge and flash him the cryptic hand signal he’ll grant a temporary injunction "For Texas and Miss Lilly." Then they can sort out who the plaintiffs are in this class action lawsuit later.

I’m sorry to say the subject of this book is an exercise in compromised nihilism that collapses every time it seems like it makes any kind of sense. I suggest Kohel contact a good sex mag and cut a deal to intersperse his text with pictures of mutually supportive subject matter. Even though it’s hard to tell where the impetus for this manifesto starts or leaves off, giving credit where credit is due, [no pun intended] we are taken to the abyss of rather droll subject matter, then adeptly brought back to question the existence of authentic ideas in a manner that begs to ask the carnal question as to what reality does the concept of intellectual property being proprietary conform?

Just because this is a daunting task, don’t let that be a deterrent to your education. One thing I can tell you, there is nothing here that is predictable. In a world where the paternalistic instincts of an entertainment attorney can easily spill over into the paedophile, one cannot help but get the many paradoxes found in the subject matter, as well as the underlying feeling of propriety mixed with dirty thoughts such as those that might be aroused by meeting the children’s teacher in a porn shop. I’m not knocking the profession here entirely. In Kohel’s case I suspect he at least has a higher class of client than his "slip and fall," divorce, or heaven forbid corporate law compadres. Speaking of which, when his legal amigos hear the horse hooves through the intellectual property doorway, they will undoubtedly all cry out "Quien es? Quien Es? (Who [or I should say Who's there?] is it?) If they like the answer they will send someone a bill, otherwise it’s Bat Masterson in a new suit, it’s a lawsuit, and you’ll have one in the morning.

With this bible of Kohel’s in one hand and creative license in the other, "the suits" get their necessary platitudes as mechanisms for a capitalistic order in this "’karma’ sutra like" instruction manual, and the artist gets some relief for the anxiety and panic caused by their hip-hopish maniacal knee jerk mistrust of conformity. Makes for a nice literary symbiosis, however the relationship drawn here is both enigmatic and complex. On the one hand you are "keeping the allowance" coming for some, [so they can buy more milk and crayons] while allowing others to have the freedom to keep dreaming their psychic visions of car crashes without the fear of infringing on copyrights.

Enough of the big words, let’s put on some garlic, grab the mirrors, a cross and drive a stake in this puppy. Apologies all around, but Kohel didn’t hand me this task because I mince words. Watch out if you have some sort of a monolithic God crush, this preamble is not meant as a testament towards good loosing to evil, but in a landscape so spiritually barren, Lennon’s quote; "God is a concept by which we measure our pain." becomes easily believable to those on the fence. This is not a book of prayer, and subsequently where one may previously have viewed art as something aesthetic, it quickly takes on such a nightmarish hue and covetous overtone, that if old testament King David’s art was his "Secret Sin," then Bathsheba’s pregnancy would be the proof of her plagiarism. Moses could sign for the sequel, then make a come back with a few new commandments. Better hide the tablets, but for now, the jury is out.

Like a preface to some Aleister Crowley children’s story, with the knowledge you learn from here forward, you can never go back. After various deliberations I forced this summary, which I’m afraid, underplays the ways in which this tome becomes a camera obscura. Without Hollywood, [which is now run by attorneys] there would be less of a need for this book. Here is a group whose ethical compass is so lost they write their own movie reviews. Now I will take the opportunity to point out the double speak madness that comes with the subject matter. Here we have humans pointing at other humans and saying "You’re the Karaoke Singer," "No, you’re the Karaoke singer." "You can’t steal from me what I’ve worked so hard to steal from others without even asking." It’s ridiculous. Theft may be the highest form of flattery, but ultimately, it usually boils down to who has the pawn ticket.

So let’s elevate this whole debate a little, while at the same time reducing it in simplicity to playing both sides of a game of go. My answer to an intellectual property theft conviction [as with horse stealing, etc.] is this; Get a noose. The attorneys are already trying to figure out who owns the intellectual property rights to our public executions so they can put together a distribution deal. We can put these "intellectual property criminals" to death in some equivalent of a public square, and I will guarantee above and beyond anything the "right to lifers" have to say, it will be a real deterrent. Have these live executions run first on CSPAN. Then sell the rights to a cartoon cable channel with the proceeds going to a national "scared straight" program. And… with good prime time ratings now practically requiring sexual frisson combined with blood lust we can run an "intellectual property rights executions compilation extravaganza" with laughs for the whole family. I’m not saying a few innocent people won’t slip through the trap door, but I think the marketing and pr people can spin it as "the price of democracy." In any case, the price is right.

If someone hires Robert Shapiro to "litigate" the infidels, the defendants can have a Johnny Cochran moment, or visa versa. I can hear Johnny now, reciting some Decarsean monologue about "What is reality anyway?" or "Even a fool knows, you can’t own parts of the moon."

You see, the people in Hollywood think they are all geniuses. What they don’t realize is that true genius is the ability to recognize it in others. But then again, "the business" [not unlike "the family" or "our thing"] is a secret society that can’t tell a joke, much less a good story, and all their scripts and suicide notes sound the same. This is a direct result of God’s just anger against their evil, cutting them off from His goodness and the good movies that would otherwise be intrinsically theirs if they had not traded the quest for moral beauty (righteousness) for the moronic, insane privilege of defining good film on their own, ultimately self-destructive, terms.

You may think that all rationality has broken down at this point, so I’ll introduce this quasi-abstract theorem to get us back on terra firma. Godel’s proof; "A mathematical proof that under a specified consistency condition, any sufficiently strong formal axiomatic system must contain a proposition such that neither it nor its negation is provable and that any consistency proof for the system must use ideas and methods beyond those of the system itself. -Kurt Godel

Better yet. Quoting from Wheeler’s Recognition Physics: ‘Nothing exist until it is observed.’ Use that if you are the plaintiff, or show the "art" has been altered seven percent if you are the defendant. There’s my free jailhouse lawyer advise. Whose a shameless faker? It’s like my own bar-b-q sauce or salad dressing. ‘Guaranteed’ to expose any posing miscreant Scaramouch.

I’m not just trying to baffle with bull here. "There is no such thing as science fiction, only science fact." I want to say Arthur C. Clarke, said that, but if the spirit moves you, send Kohel an email if I’m wrong. Haver addresses the same concept here as Scenes a fair. (There is nothing new under the sun"). Currently, human evolution is such that our brains, as they exist now, are unable to originate, or comprehend an original idea in this or any other parallel universe. I accuse alien replicants and other board members of this as if it’s a heinous crime, knowing full well it will fry what little is left of their cerebral hard drives. Ain’t I a stinker? One might think I’m obsessively dragging for bodies in this swamp, but this is the area that deserves every bit of attention and the book would be weightless without it.

In America [probably other places too] anyone can sue for anything. In L.A. it’s a corporate plot line. Whether they are right or wrong, It’s akin to being "nibbled to death by a duck." What I’ve addressed here in a rather laborious manner, you can use as a tool. A guideline. It’s good. Too good actually. First it seems useful, then reality kicks in and it’s horrible. Horrible and sad. If you want the be all end all, send Kohel a retainer check. Isn’t that what this is all about anyway? Haver, this is the equivalent of holding my crotch and pimping hard for ya baby! I’ll put on a short skirt and you can take me out and buy me a steak.

In practice, if you as the artist are going to create something, my suggestion would be to dash out a script outline and follow it [even for the most impromptu shots, because going back to get the release later might be tough] like an anal "rights and clearances" person whose life depends on the talent and location release, or the product placement/product usage request. Then take a minute and think about what’s going to be "in the frame" in advance. In some instances, with their permission, it behooves you to shoot celebrities first, then ask them to sign the release. Once they have done the shot, they feel like they have already "done the work," and they know if they pass the release to "their people," their work will never see the light of day. Of course, you know that having their people read the release ahead of time will never result in any footage either. So you have everything to gain and nothing to loose.

Use stock footage for your establishment shots or your missing second unit transitions. No, on second thought, don’t shoot anything original. Never shoot anything. Just use stock footage. You can add subtitles if you like. It will help you come in on budget and no one will care or know the difference.

If you go to all the trouble of actually thumbing through this book, try to ingest some of the value. Right now we have an undeniable cultural epidemic of suicidal consumer binging. This is brought on by the screws placing everyone in a TV-addled marketing coma, supported by music, sports, cars, food, fashion, etc. Here may be our last chance to return to anything real. Bringing democracy instead of mind control to the airwaves may all boil down to how you use this book. And just know from the get go that any introduction of truth into your cocktail may result in your becoming a self imposed social vagrant.

As I think of the "new barbarians" plundering "race music" with their cliff notes, Elbert Hubbard brings me back down to earth by putting everything in perspective; "Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive." Oh, and if you think for a second you can reprint this "mythopoeic thought" without my express permission, I’ll sue you blue.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to scare anyone. I’m just suggesting you calmly and cautiously approach this material as one would choose a pair of pliers to separate the kids from their first loose tooth. I can’t speak for Stalin or Gandhi, but the good work Kohel’s put into this seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Godspeed.

The reputation economy dovetails perfectly with the theory of affective economics where the consumer is active, emotionally engaged and socially networked. It is here that the brand is constantly vetted as a “commodity of choice.” These are the commodities picked by the target knowledge community through the hypersocial sphere of media they chose to consume. It is the interconnections or entry points that touch the neighbors where the story is passed along to other adjoining Web communities through the connecting love marks and entry points.

Here affective economics, a reputation economy and commodities of choice set the stage for a viable “ethics based” commerce system. What if there was a “clearing house” for an “ethical reality?” A place where the idle rich, the fat & lazy and the environmentally wrong can cleanse themselves of their sins before they are cleansed themselves?

Here you can trade your own waste for green carbon credits. Or give yourself a front line que into a series of passes so you can rush in front of everybody else just before you vaporize? You can leave yourself a lasting legacy of hope, where good triumphs over evil leaving a personalized virtual tombstone that says “I tried.”

Not only do you get a golden express pass down the highway to the western lands, but it is also transferable into ALL virtual worlds. A hypersocial rewards program that leaves a love based footprint only attainable in the meta verse.

When Renny Gleeson, Global Digital Strategies Director for Wieden + Kennedy, started talking about virtual worlds at the Inverge 2007 conference people listened. I will paraphrase what he said which was this:

A brand is NOT a moment in time. It is a relationship. A relationship built and maintained by on ongoing dialogs with consumers. There are a number of active social interaction points where consumers expect to be able to reach out and talk to you for a meaningful relationship.

Your presence is an investment. It’s not about the number of people that were able to “experience” the brand at any one time, but the fact that a touch point had been established and was being maintained. Brands that “missed the point” in second life got out and walked away. Without the power of this particular touch point, there is a disjointed brand experience which detracts from your investment in brand presence.

With Inverge 2007: The interactive Convergence Conference approaching, a number of convergence discussions from this past year have come to mind. The conference is a multi-disciplinary conference happening on Thursday & Friday September 6-7 in Portland, Oregon focusing on the invergence of media platforms, online + offline, content + advertising, corporate content and consumer-generated media..

In July of 2007 I had conversations with Chris Pirillo and John Anthony Hartman about the convergence of emerging media. We discussed how smart sponsors could benefit from market opportunities arising from the evolution of social media through an understanding of content convergence and the Internet. John talked about affective economics and the evolution of a new “reputation economy.” Chris shared his insights on video and integrated branding. I wondered if affective economic theory, transmedia sponsorship strategies and “commodities of choice” could create a viable form of “ethics based commerce?” Thanks Chris and John for your insight. Here is Part I of “a liberal recap” of those conversations. -Rod

“When I’m watchin’ my TV
And that man comes on to tell me
How white my shirts can be
But he can’t be a man ’cause he doesn’t smoke
The same cigarettes as me”
SATISFACTION Jagger - Richards

WHAT DO GOOGLE AND THE ROLLING STONES HAVE IN COMMON? They sell things. They have a great brand and they do very little advertising. This is done by monetizing the commonality of relationships they enable between people. In other words, The Stones are smoking the right cigarettes to tell the interlacing communities that touch their art how white their shirts should be. And what brand of bleach or detergent they should buy to make it so. And with that kind power Mick may not be to far off the mark when he sings “I can do whatever I want … any old time”.

How did The Rolling Stones and Google become so empowered? People Power. Power to the people. First and foremost people trust people. Not companies. It is people being happy with their product and telling other people how happy they were that made their brand.

Start me up. How can I create a brand that people will patronize and evangelize? Be real. Be honest, be transparent, provide a way to engage people so they can communicate with you, and have that communication be participatory. Admit your mistakes and adjust accordingly. Now, start over, do this again, in a new unit of time. It’s that simple.

There were reasons why Google Video as we knew it is over. Your Satanic Majesties request was not the last Stones record. They recognized their mistakes, listened to their audience, improved their product and went on to be arguably the greatest search engine and rock and roll band in the world.

How do you create this strength in branding? Again, you will not find Google or The Rolling Stones doing much advertising. If these two companies [and make no mistake about it The Stones are a very successful organization] did not create these powerful brands through advertising how did they do it? People. O.K., if I am going to create my brand through people, where will the people come from? The Internet.

The Internet is an interconnected network of people. So…we all know there are people on the Internet. Globally. Now that we know where the people are, how do we connect?

Why did Google buy YouTube? A picture is worth a thousand words. The best way to reach people on the web is through video. But what is the strategy? We have all heard the term viral video. Viral video is a buzz word not a strategy. A proven strategy that works is engaging in a “video based transmedia sponsorship program.” What is transmedia? Also called multi-platform and multi-modality, this media application uses multi-modal representations to convey a brand through numerous content sources. By using different media we create the entry points through which consumers become immersed in a “brand world.”

YOUR STORY IS YOUR BRAND

Convergence on steroids. Based on the transmedia dynamic, transmedia story telling or enhanced story telling is based on content integration and hypersociability. It’s all about the story. There are two prominent factors during the growth of transmedia story telling. First is the continued proliferation of new media forms like video games, the Internet, mobile platforms and a content demand for each. The second is an economic incentive for media creators to lower production cost by sharing assets.

Transmedia storytelling represents a shift in the way we think about our relationship to media. Pop culture mixed with new interactive skills has redefined the way we learn, work, participate in the political process and interact with others around the globe. It has redefined our role as consumers. User generated stratagems now have the audience deciding the look, feel and future of media content.

BRAND EXTENSION, SYNERGY & FRANCHISING

As video is the best way to reach people on the web, transmedia dynamics enables the video to be an effective integrated branding tool. Here is how it works in theory. Transmedia dynamics enables organic “entry points” for an “edutainment experience.” These entry points or touch points are where your existing customer base interconnect with your potential customers. Here you are able to engage, brand and transact with multiple groups all at the same time. If your brand is mentioned seven times within a social circle it is being adopted by the market. Hopefully in a positive way.

The touch points or “extensions” are where your message is placed to expand potential markets through brand movement across different delivery systems. A synergy of “lovemarks,” [see below] participatory knowledge, culture and autonomy create the environment for economic opportunity through coordinated brand franchising. This promotes the circulation and exchange of commodities.

The key is getting your audience to engage in the participatory process. It’s all about people or as Renoir said “the feeling across the table.” You not only want to get them to engage, but to engage in the appropriate manner that will move your brand forward. To have that feeling across the table be a good one, we use “lovemarks.” Lovemarks are the interlaced commonality of human emotional connections. These connections capture the viewers imagination leaving a memory that inspires the necessary interaction for a commodity exchange experience. Lovemarks are the mystery, sensuality and intimacy that link the brand to the consumer. Because of the commonality of this human process, our lives, relationships, memories, fantasies and desires have collectively become the conduit for transmedia transactions in our new participatory culture.

With video at the core of you transmedia brand storytelling strategy, video and a video sponsorship program is the perfect hub for over 100 touch points in your integrated branding effort. Over 100 places where you can engage your audience in a participatory fashion. When you add live streaming as another dynamic component you can now deliver transmedia transaction “experiences” quicker than any traditional media can.

MIND SHARE EQUALS MARKET SHARE

Remember, think Google, think The Rolling Stones. Brand recognition is more valuable than any advertisement tracked with verifiable metrics. Win with lovemarks and their minds will follow. Mind share equals Market share. So once you have their heart and minds cued up then what do you do? First, the world doesn’t work for you or your company. Know it, love it, live it. Your customers see your relationship as give and take. Be transparent. In the new reputation economy the network that is the Internet will separate truth from fiction and spin. As you meet the challenges of a product life cycle, your biggest supporters will appreciate being able to connect with you and be glad to share the news. This form of contextually relevant integrated branding will produce a better product and make happy employees. Employees are a great source of evangelism. Happy employees are loyal employees. Happy customers increase sales, enhance your reputation and market your product for you.

The reputation economy dovetails perfectly with the theory of affective economics where the consumer is active, emotionally engaged and socially networked. It is here that your brand is constantly vetted as a “commodity of choice.” These are the commodities picked by the target knowledge community [your customers] through the social sphere of media they chose to consume. It is the interconnections or entry points that touch the neighbors [potential customers] where your story is passed along to other adjoining web communities through the connecting love marks and entry points.

And what’s next? What exciting things might the future hold? Maybe affective economics, a reputation economy and commodities of choice will set the stage for a viable “ethics based” commerce system. Stay tuned and be the change.

I wrote this back on April 24th 2005 for Glimpse of Tommorow and thought it needed to be revisited in this space and in this context.

What happens when we all record our existence 24 hours a day seven days a week? When privacy comes only in controlled environments and any public venue is an always on recorded experience. “I’m ready for my close up Mr. Deville.” This radical change to society is little understood by the general populace and the reaction that seems to be the strongest is a pervasive fear of the loss of privacy. Unfortunately this like the whole genetics debate is like Pandora trying to close the lid after the problems has escaped, but just like in the myth we still have hope. The debate needs to move beyond the initial phase of how to stop the loss of privacy into the reality of how to regulate this new cyber society. It is no longer a question of if this will happen but how soon.
We need to start a dialog on where to set the taboo bar. As an example it is a future date and Professor Steve Mann’s vision of putting a camera in a contact lens is a reality. We are now able to use a wireless feed from your contact to a wearable computer which records your daily life. This makes the obvious shoulder mounted video camera a thing of the past. At any time any place you could be recorded and you would never even realize it. Some taboo recording environments are easy to define, bathrooms, locker rooms others are not so easy to define. Defining these rules of recorded existence is what we should be debating and trying to define what is a realistic expectation of privacy.

We have a great many legal battles yet to be fought over what is an expectable right to privacy. Is it admissible in court for my “surveillance” video of you selling drugs on the street? What about through that open window if I see you using drugs in your house? What is my legal recourse if you film me without my knowledge and then distribute that video for profit? What if Paris didn’t know she was being filmed? Where are we free to do all the personal events in our own lives without it showing up on the Internet?

Right now in London and many other cities around the world our existence in public is already being recorded. If you were so privileged as to go to a Super Bowl or other major event recently then you were recorded and run through visual recognition systems to look for the “bad” guys. One of the unexpected side affects of the camera phone explosion is the number of purse snatching and other crimes where a picture of the criminal is e-mailed to the police; smile your on Candid Camera. The reality of the matter is we are already well on our way to this existence and we must take a look at our irrational fears and or very rational concerns.

The price point on storage has gotten so low that a terabyte in our pockets is soon to be so inexpensive that we can literally record every moment of the day. I just wonder who is going to sit down and edit a full days worth of video in real time. Final Cut Pro, Avid or Premier will be software that many more people will become conversant with, we should by stock. Let’s just hope all video-mail isn’t a series of star wipes and quick fades, you know it will be. At this point the shear amount of video will overfill the pocket and move into the home and office can any one say doggabyte.

What I see is a booming market for video scanning systems that use visual recognition to pull up what the user is looking for. Another configuration is a unique time code based system that runs the extent of a human life for quick reference to John Does life video.

The way to deal with this coming change is not to try and litigate ourselves back in time, but to come up with boundaries and imaginative solutions to these issues. What can we do to put safe guards in place in designated no video areas? Would it not make sense to develop counter measures to scramble any video recording in these predefined areas? We now have companies like Netline who have developed cell phone jamming technology or cellular firewalls to prohibit the use of such devices in areas where security is a concern or something as mundane as a movie theater. We already have patents filed for the “Personal Video Surveillance Disrupting Device” and others that are geared towards jamming or detecting jamming devices.

Gnomedex is like the big screen vs. your home theater or the stadium game vs. the television set. You can smell the popcorn and hotdogs, talk to drunk people in person as well as have an opportunity to see the animals, not in their natural environ, but behind the various veneers they use to keep the general public from getting too close. It is here we came, not seeking more info on AJAX but our own little twitter. Not a what are you doing, but where are you as a human?

We got to interact with a handful of people, here are a couple you might be interested in hearing what they had to say;

Schlomo Rabinowitz talks about the mountain of content we are creating and the unedited life cast. His premise is that it is still about the craft. Kosso talks about meeting the love of his life on twitter then taking the technology elevation love train all the way to Ustream. Kosso pre-dated twitter building a blog for 2nd Life and now there is Treedia, his new Social Multi-Media Networking feed management platform that will organize and connect directories for any type of media content through the Zen of OPML.

We thought Gnomedex would be a good place for some IPTV Participatory television and we definitely found it. Story lines by and for Geeks in the global blogging community. A place to come watch, interact and develop the viewer’s own interviews, discussions and topics with blog industry leaders as a viewer mash up of this particular knowledge culture. We thought we would run with the open transparent approach, which is becoming more and more the working norm in this geek space as a part of the tribal dynamic. This openness would be one of the ingredients that would craft the evolution of the show. Who can tell you more about the proper way to do this than than the viewers? And boy, did they tell us.

Sometimes when the flit hits the sham it’s best to let Mick and Keith do the talking;

"Saint Paul the persecutor
Was a cruel and sinful man
Jesus hit him with a blinding light
And then his life began

Augustin knew temptation
He loved women, wine and song
And all the special pleasures
Of doing something wrong

And could you stand the torture
And could you stand the pain
Could you put your faith in Jesus
When you're burning in the flames

And I do believe in miracles
And I want to save my soul
And I know that I'm a sinner
I'm gonna die here in the cold

John the Baptist was a martyr
But he stirred up Herod's hate
And Salome got her wish
To have him served up on a plate

I thought I heard an angel cry
I thought I saw a teardrop
falling from his eye
I thought I saw an angel cry

You'll never make a saint of me"

-Mick & Keith SAINT OF ME - Rolling Stones

One of the things we found out was that our “rough and ready” approach to the story jangled some nerves and added some unexpected color to the underlying commentary. Oh well, we never set out to be perfect, or said it would be easy, so we just left it “like scars in fine leather” proof of authenticity. This may start the privacy debate all over again, but that is not my intention here. We apologized for our missteps [real and imagined] and asked to initiate a conversation or dialogue on the subject which has been met by the equivalent of a singular burp.

So it is here that I would like to make my personal apology to anyone who felt invaded in a personal way. For this I am sorry.

Now we continue to push forward through the jungle. With a well placed foot in the door we are taking a glance at everything you always wanted to know about ” geek specific tribal reality”, technology, science and culture, from the frustrations of a corporate “straight job” to living a “free range” geek’s dream.

Maybe people will buzz by the chat room, a corner in the Internet party where people come to “talk outside the noise” of the echo chamber. A place to create context and organize information, synthesize imagination, beauty and content using social media tools to deliver high quality trans media solutions to help create a better reality. Or something…

A geek dream stream through modern life with the continuous reach for autonomy and freedom as we juggle the onslaught of knowledge cultures, collective identities and a multiplicity of world views. Really the live stream is just another component that fills a place in the work flow. A place you can go, when for whatever reason you can’t reload the tape, there is the ability to grab history, no matter how trivial. Just like a security cam waiting to bust the case wide open, the gems may be based on a happy accident. Not only is the craft still there, but a continuous work in progress based on your desires and our collective ability to bring them to realization. Whether broadcasting LIVE via the Internet, or staging transmedia syndication, the audience has the chance to participate in this interactive experience giving and getting immediate feedback from other viewers as well as LIVE participants on the show. The feedback also helps craft what YOU want to see for both present time and future content, live or achieved.

So, as Saint Paul & John say;

"Oh yeah, all right
Are you gonna be in my dreams tonight?
Love you, love you...
And in the end the love you take
Is equal to the love you make."

It’s the new way… it’s up to you… in this first primodial spot in the history of live streaming, it is going to be messy and sometimes experimental… as anyone who has ever played with a chemistry set knows, sometimes the experiment foams over and makes a mess. Perhaps it it time for some rules of engagement.

If Chris Pirillo’s show lacked pansexuality resolution in the past, the Alpha Geek TV crew figured it would remedy that with the “if you could be any woman” question in the Pirillo expose. Not to say that the show has not fared well with a pushy, morally aggressive kind of sexuality, and God knows technology could use, along with a few other things, some good spring heeled energy, but, with some notable exceptions, the mojo that Chris profiled in boxers or briefs was a bit timid and flaccid.

So… we figured a well placed transgender transmedia question would spice things up and bring some color to that pale pasty white Gnome staring at the monitors in archetypal butch, complete with an “avatar package” bulge, short hair, horn-rimmed glasses, and a lucky strike pack of opinions rolled up his T-shirt sleeve.

Now, blink, then cut to Chris as Latthanapon, resplendent in high heels, think old school panty hose, maybe some rouge, mascara, long ebony locks, a man with all his connotations of complexity, and electro-magnetic perversity. Wicket the dog, Pirillo’s “consultant,” has the instinct to tell you it’s all there with Chris, but toward the end, where Lou Reed meets Bowie meets Iggy Pop, in boxers or briefs, it all just boils down to if Chris could be any woman in the world it would be the most important woman in his world.

Alpha Geek TV’s slow train running to the back of the beyond fires into hyper drive with its first program Outside of the Echo Chamber - an exhibition of Chris Pirillo. What will probably be one of the precursors to our upcoming series THE LAST OF THE BUFFALO AND THE NEW BARBARIANS, love, like him or “think he’s a tool,” he is not only a geek’s geek, but a thinking geek’s geek. If there is a way out of our national nightmare turned global socio-economic meltdown, it will take some real HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL cerebral gunslingers to help us turn ideas into action and Pirillo is one of the New Barbarians that fit the bill.

To the degree that Chris has done what he’s done to date, the sheer volume and interest make him a legend in this space. Now our visit will cement this particular tree ring of conversation into space and time. We will periodically drop a post to give you some “signage” and hook you up with some of the magic moments or happy accidents we had with Chris outside of the formal questions.

With this throwdown you will find Chris “I’m just a geek” Pirillo in full meta0meta vision discussing the battery life extension benefits of the LED backlight for 15 inch MacBooks, cost savings of freeware, webcam max for Windows and its relation to oral sex, cam twist video effects and RSS feeds, his dog Pixie’s iPhone, and the fact that most Windows apps behave like white trash cousins.

When approached about sportswriting for Alpha Geek TV, I responded with “I know a little about sports and less about technology.” I felt this endeared me to the endeavor when I was told to just try and write a follow up post for anything remotely interesting so you can grab a part of the thread as your dribble becomes another voice in The Echo Chamber.

Geeks come in all shapes and sizes. We are going to be brushing brains with some famous people and some you need to look a little harder to see because they are tree top flyers. We hope that you enjoy our geeks from all the various knowledge communities that we feel so privileged to be invited in for table talk. To that end I’ll leave you with an honorary member of the San Pedro chapter of Alpha Geek TV. He is a bass geek supreme, as well as a Godfather of the DIY culture. If you don’t know who Mike Watt is, we are going to show you right here, right now. Don’t just watch.

VMware and Parallels for Virtual Machines

It doesn't matter if you're running on Windows or Mac OS X - every power user needs either <a href="http://send.onenetworkdirect.net/z/13766/rn_a32755/">Parallels</a> or <a href="http://send.onenetworkdirect.net/z/17081/rn_a32755/">VMware</a> (or both). There's never been an easier way to test software without destroying your primary operating system's stability. Think of how many times you wish you could press a 'reverse' button on your computer. Plus, there's no easier way to try new Linux distributions - see what all the fuss is about. Run Windows in OS X, run Linux in Windows, but the best way to do either is with <a href="http://send.onenetworkdirect.net/z/17081/rn_a32755/">VMware</a> and/or <a href="http://send.onenetworkdirect.net/z/13766/rn_a32755/">Parallels</a>.
